Moved over from the UK to Melbourne a year ago with my husband's job. While Victoria has a lot to offer in terms of places to see, living & working in Melbourne has not been great, and not the best introduction to Australia. We are looking at moving over to Perth in about 6 months time, and as we have a 3 year old I really don't want to make a wrong decision. I'd really like to hear from people who've moved to Perth in the last year or so (and locals) about life there. Tips on settling in, importantly good suburbs to live in for small kids. Also how do you take the stress out of setting up utilities - it was a total nightmare here. Does anyone know which areas have got cable laid as I like not be tied to Telstra phone networks as they are unable to give us broadband in the Melbourne suburb we live in due to capacity. I'd really like to be able to use our webcam. Just a bit weary of the frustrations and disappointments we've experienced here and would like to make the next move a more positive experience.

Any advice would be great

Sorry to hear your experience hasn't been all you'd hoped for, Were going to Perth next year and done loads of research and asked loads of question. I haven't spoke to 1 person yet thats not enjoying perth. Ellenbrook Morley Joondalup are just a few places that have been reccommended to me, have you tried the expat site and poms in perth site, They seem a bit busier than this one. (thats not a complaint) LOL

Hi,
I've not been to Melbourne so can't compare WA. From what people have told me it's a much slower pace here, and people have said Vic has "more going on" but that was one of the reasons we chose WA. We (well hubby) set up utilities without problem, we get our phone from inet with internet access and use our webcam.

We live in Leeming which is about 15mins from perth and 20 mins from Freo. My hubby has worked around Ellenbrook and that area will be telstra cable (my hubbys company is selling it to them), and he says there isn't much there at the moment (shops etc.).

Moving to Perth is definitely the right thing to do. Can't compare it with Melbourne as i haven't lived there? Have however lived in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Darwin, Sydney............... all of which are very nice but I would much rather prefer to live in Perth.

Setting up utilities here is a piece of cake................. and Perth is a great place if you have young children. Don't want to knock Melbourne too much as I have never been there other than at the airport............ haven't heard too many compliments about the place though over the years?
