The most expensive area is the Western Suburbs. Northern and Southern suburbs are similar in that the further away you are from the city, the cheaper it generally is. You move out as far as your budget dictates.

Everyone to his/her own?

Had we gone south of the river 18 years ago we probably would have still been there. As it happened our kid lived north of the river in Beldon .......... so we chose to be close to him in Wanneroo. Wasn't the best of choices........ but we live and learn.

I think you're right, we stumbled on Leeming by chance got a 12 week furnished rental whilst our furniture arrived - hadn't really heard of it before - really liked the area (and surrounding suburbs). Had our rental been north of the river we'd have probably settled there

G'day

Back when I was a young lad in the mid 70's. Waikiki was considered to be a small village in the "bush", way, way outside the Perth metropolitan area. Rockingham itself was considered a country town. At the time there were restrictions on pubs in the Perth area selling booze on a Sunday so we used to go bush to the Beer Garden at the Waikiki hotel.

The drive from Thornlie/Canning Vale to Waikiki took about 80 minutes each way and was predominantly on a single lane sand track through all the intervening swamps and bushland. Actually it was probably 70 minutes there and 90 or more coming back.

Things have changed lots since then, and despite a few years spent in North Perth and Nedlands I remain a SOR dweller probably for no reason other than we came here first. It's a bit like that, both NOR and SOR offer similar areas and similar prices and similar amenties. There isn't a lot to chose between them other than familiarity or prejudices. As Perth gets bigger the SOR and NOR seem to get further apart and increasingly I consider NOR dwellers to be akin to some stunted developmental alien life form.

We had never been to Australia when we moved here & before we came we did lots of reading up on different suburbs. We were sure we loved the sound of SOR. How wrong we were!
We organised a rental in Warnbro for 4 weeks so that we could have a look round & decide. When we arrived my heart sank & I all I could think was 'WTF have we done?!' It was nothing how I had pictured it to be. We drove NOR & felt totally different. We loved it. We are now in Mindarie & love it here. So glad we didn't just settle for where we'd landed.

We felt more comfortable with NOR as we had stayed here 14 years ago, that is probably why we picked it. We really didn't have time to go SOR when sorting everything out when you land and have settled in Ashby. We love it here, close to the shops and 10 minutes from the beach. Only downfall is not having a local pub for my hubby, he has to walk 30 minutes to the pub! (What a shame).

I like so many people are baffled at this NOR SOR thing, what is the big difference apart from prejudice...if it is possible could you make some references, like if you had to compare it to places in england,i know this can never be possible but pls try.
Like where do young couples tend to move to?. My wife and i have been married for 3 yrs now,and would like to start a family when when in aus, perth is probably where we would end up but just knowing where to go.

We came out here and inituially stayed in Willetton (SOR) with my brother and his family. We liked the area but it came down to schools. As we have 2 children we had to look for a primary and secondary. We knew that Willetton senior and Rossmoyne senior were top in the league tables, although through working in a school I know how much of a pinch of salt to take these 'tables' with.
We looked round Willetton and my son didn't get a good vibe, coupled with not being able to secure a rental there, we decided to look further afield.
My sis in law mentioned a few other suburbs, Leeming being one of them. We had a look round the schools and both my children felt a lot happier. First rental we applied for, we got.
And from then we haven't looked back. We love how it's so easy to get north and south from here, 5 mins from the train stations and major road networks. It's whisper quite at night time, beach is 15 mins drive and the shops are 5 mins walk. I love living in an established area, Leeming has everything we need.

We are in Bibra Lake - lovely place to be, even though my first love and main residence was in Floreat. A long time ago ..... SOR/NOR I see no issues - each area has good and bad areas within it. Girrawheen for example? No thanks. Warnbro? uhuh. Kardinya is lovely, but we are also looking at Canning Vale.
