Hi, my name is Lisa, I moved to quinns rocks 6 weeks ago with my husband and two sons aged 3 and 6.
Is there anything going on round here that anyone knows of where we might meet people?:D
or is anyone in a similar situation?
I'm not sure what's around the Quinns Rock area Lisa - have you checked your local paper, library and recreation centre? We're hoping to have a meet in late November early december in Kings Park

Hi Lisa,
We are new to this forum and new to the area also.
We arrived only 4 weeks ago, and although busy with settling in haven't had the chance to make many friends yet.
Have settled in Mindarie, and have 3 kids, age 7, 4 and 5months.
The recent 'Vacswim' sessions orgainised during school holidays have been excellent.
We have also registered the eldest at Quinns Rock surf club which looks great fun and is due to start by the end of October.
The Boat at the marina in Mindarie has free kids activities organised on Tuesday nights allowing the adults to have a relaxing meal and drink, whilst you can still keep an eye on them.
If you have any other tips please let us know.
Cheers:)

Hi Lisa & chocoholics
There is a small group of us that meet in The Boat, Mindarie on a Tuesday lunchtime. You'd be very welcome to join us. There's also a few families that get together in The Boat on a Tuesday night as you mentioned chocaholics. Yes sometimes it feels I haven't left there on a Tuesday :embarassed:
I'm in Mindarie, have a 4 year old daughter & would be happy to meet up anytime. I can remember what it was like when we first arrived (8 months ago) not knowing anyone.

I think I will join you but not just yet, we see our dog in quarantine every day at the moment
How will I know you all? Perhaps you could all carry a red rose................joke
But I have mentioned to Chocoholic about meeting there Tuesday evening, presumably you'll be half cut by then?

Hi Lisa
I don't think I'll be going for the next 4 weeks as we have friends from the UK arriving next week & staying with us for a month. However the other girls that go would also be very welcoming if you want to pop along. As you walk in, past the bar, look to your left thats where we normally sit! When you're ready to go I'll pm you my number if you like & then you can give me a call when you arrive.
We'll still be going in on the evening if you want to join us. As for being half cut (lol), I don't normally drink during the day, well maybe one! and on the evening it depends who wins the toss - drinker or driver. My husband normally wins that one unfortunately

has anyone on this forum heard of the "poms in perth" forum, there seems to be a lot more "happening" on there,i am not having a go at this forum you understand............but it might interest a few people that there is more than one place to get info on perth, you only have to look at how many people look at this forum compared to others to see there could be more to be learned at another site, i look in on this site sometimes and am amazed at how few people actually use it, great lay-out an stuff but not many posts!!, spread your wings people, this thread was started by someone wanting to meet people, take a look else where, you will have more friends than you know what to do with!!!

.........................just noticed, a total of 838 posts on the entire forum, threads on other sites have that many replies on their own!!!, i am not having a go at this site, i understand its relatively new...................just lots more out there that may be of use to you!!! its hard getting over to oz, just thought i would let others know all the answers they are looking for are out there, its just knowing where to look!! www.pomsinperth.com.au
Perth Poms sister site is having a meet December 2nd in Kings Park (check out www.pomsinoz.com). from 11am I agree PP, people should use alot of sites, some will suit people better than others, (you're right this isn't used that frequently) I personally haven't found the site you mentioned very friendly, someone posted about their decision to return to UK and got slated - the guy was looking for a supportive environment and didn't get it. It reminded me a little of the ex pats site. Aussiemove is a great site for information especially about schools and suburbs.

Hi Chocaholics,
My Wife, our two boys (4 and 2) and I will be looking to arrive in Perth at some point in Feb 2008. Main points of concern at the moment are : where do we live? I have a job offer in central Perth, and don't mind travelling up to an hour (as I do here in London). We're possibly looking at Joondalup or surrounding area's. I've surfed the Aussie rental website's to death, and they all start looking the same after a while!! Any real life advice would be cool. Also, my Wife and spiders don't get alonhg too well. Although we're realistic and know that they're about, are they a problem? We don't intend to get anywhere near them, but my lads are mini David Bellamy's and love forraging in the undergrowth! I'm not concerned about redbacks (although nasty if bitten, not too big), but the Huntsman (at 15cm across!!) - now that's a different matter. Again, any spider related advice would be most welcome!!
Looking forward to your response.
Kind regards,
Justin, Emma, George & Henry

Justin, I've just replied to your other post but just to add, my husband works in Perth's CBD. He gets the train everyday. It'll only take you roughly 20 minutes on the train from Joondalup. The trains are also very reliable. Absolutely no point in sitting in traffic on the freeway, & have hassle with parking in the City.
Deciding where to live, best thing to do is get a holiday rental for a few weeks & have a drive around when you get here before deciding where you want to live long term. Don't commit to anything long term before you've checked it out for yourselves.

If you are willing to travel up to an hour, you can live just about anywhere in outer districts of Perth. First decision is North or South of the River, generally North if you want to be close to beaches, generally newer suburbs, and house for money. South is more established suburbs, houses with more charachter, tree lined streets etc and access to places like Freemantle, cottesloe etc.
If you go north, the suburbs are split to either the left (closer to beach and hence more expensive) or right of Marmion avenue. Nice ones we looked at Mindarie, Iluka, Ocean reef, Quinns rock, Mullalloo, Kallaroo.
Get the kids names down and registered for schools as soon as you arrive, if not before by ringing them (can't remember the name but there is a good website for all the schools contact details) especially for the 4year old in Kindergarten / Pre-primary dependent on birth date, spaces are short in good schools, but they have to take them once they turn 5 in Primary school as long as you are living in the catchment area.
So good advice from Leigh, don't rush into anything, we know a few people who ended up moving a second time within a year as they found a better place.
Good websites for house rentals are real estate institute of western australia on reiwa.com and www.realestate.com.au/realestate/wa/rental+properties .
As for the spiders, they are not as bad as you hear, we have brainwashed the kids not to touch them, and to look under things before picking them up when outside. Have only seen one redback in 3 months, and killed that quickly with a spray
Good Luck with the move.
