I was talking with someone today that said in the USA there are companies that offer 'home packs' to people coming out there to live...

A home pack is a service where by the person coming out to live in an area AND knows where they will be living can pre order the whole contents of that home.

The buyer asks for a certain colour and 'look' that they want and the company select everything from sofas to tea towles, everything can be viewed and changed on-line before the buyer arrives.

On that day a big truck turns up at that persons home and drops it all off! Fantastic idea...

Anything like that in Perth, I have goggled it to death but no luck???

Not heard of it at all. Personally, I'd want to see what I was buying, it took us almost 2 months to find bedroom furniture as what we thought looked really nice in some shops, on closer inspection the drawers wouldn't have held much and the slats on the beds seemed pretty thin. We eventually found something at a shop called Bed Gallery - had to waita further 6 weeks for delivery.

Thats all well and good but we are planning to move stright into a long term rental and to be honest we want it to be unfurnished- I have seen some of the 'local' styles, they look like some 70's throw back has just been sick all over the living room :).

I have since been e-mailing a couple of local companies- i'll post an update with what they offer- one of then looked a little too posh and their price starts from $10,000 to kit out a home, now thats ok depending on what you get for that sort of money.

Failing that we might look at Ikea although the quality is questionable?

The thing is over here you haggle for just about everything, go into a shop tell them what you are looking for , ask for their best price, then go to the next shop and do the same, you can save a lot of money this way (although it can be a pain time wise) and you can even play off branches of the same company.
For electrical goods try

There is a massive new Ikea being built at the moment in Inaloo (I think) but it doesn`t open until round about March next year.
This at least will give you and idea

Certainly at places like the good guys you get money off for cash and we always say we don't want to pay delivery

I had an e-mail back from Ikea, they are willing to talk cost depending on order size.

I thinik what we might do is pre-order all the little things like kitchen stuff and all bedding to be dilivered the day or day after we get there. A fork is a fork is a fork! (why spend all day buying all that crap?)

We also are now thinking that we will stay in a B&B for the first 3-4 days while we buy all the big things.

I am still waiting for one company to come back to me with a 'Home package' deal price and some pictures.
