:oHi all, another newbie here....my family & myself are in the final stages of our Emigration Process & boy its been a long long road !! We are hoping to rent a holiday home in or around the suburbs Mullalloo for approx 1 month (we have family living there) then find a residential home to live in. I am concerned for our 3 kids 11,9 & 7yrs old...with schooling. Am not sure wether we should be looking for a good school 1st then a home nearby...or visa versa...any help please ??? anyone with some sound advise for us...we're pretty nervous as hopefully within the next few months we'll be there.

 Hiya
Thankyou for your reply....why did you move from mullaloo to clarkson?? Do you know the names of any good school in the suburbs in & around mullaloo? Do we have to be living in a property to get a place @ a school or is a temporary holiday house ok?

Kind Regards

Jules

as i live in the southern suburbs i dont know much about schools in other areas but it seems to me, after reading some posts, that a lot of people who come here from the uk tend to choose to live in suburbs further out from the city. i live in willetton which is 15min drive to the city and i regard any suburb that's any further away than that as quite far. for instance mandurah, rockingham, joondalup, hillarys and such suburbs that are frequently mentioned on this site are so far away i regard them to be borderline regional (which they were even a few yrs back, not so much now tho due to building boom). i've never even heard of many of the other suburbs and if i have, i've never been there before, eg clarkson. in relation to schools, generally, the schools in those suburbs that are far away from the city wouldn't be as developed and therefore as good (i presume) as those that are well established and i'd assume the further u live from the city, the lesser the quality of schools. my opinion is that those schools in the eastern suburbs might not be as good also, although i'm aware that sounds prejudiced. from what i've heard, if you choose a government school, especially high schools, if its good its really good if its bad its really bad. although i know someone that went to a cheaper private school in canningvale who changed to willetton hs and he said it was less rough at willetton than his old school. in terms of homework enforcement, i presume most govt highschools are pretty leniant. even though i went to a h.s. that has a fairly good reputation, the amount of homework and level of homework enforcement differed from teacher to teacher ranging from ones who gave homework and never check it to those who gave detention to those who didnt complete it. i also know girls who went to an expensive all girls school that had very strict standards and were tough on discipline (which the girls didn't like). so i suppose you should ask around about schools, ask people who've attended/ taught at those schools to find out which are good and which aren't. possibly consider living closer to the city and not the industrial/factory suburbs such as kwinana, thornlie, cannington, canningvale, armadale and surrounds (south of river). also consider the demographic of those living in the suburbs surrounding the school which might provide an idea of what the school and students might be like. from my knowledge, rockingham use to have a reputation as a rougher suburb and mandurah still has regional standard schooling... correct me if i'm wrong. i hope this goes some way into answering several post topics. phew - long post.

Might i add to my previous post that my opinion of rockingham is based on when i lived there very briefly, about 14 yrs ago. at that time and in the house i lived in, it was so deadly quite at night that you could hear a chorus of crickets and secaters from outside, with no human or traffic noise at all (even in the day, you could hear a pin drop) except for the occasional loud rattling of the train as it went past - rather like in a horror movie scene. after that brief period, my mum and i escaped to sydney - a polar opposite environment. and since then i have a fear of quite and faraway places - even now we live on a main road.

Hi everyone,

We live in Leeming which is practically your next door neighbour missy and I love it. The schools in these surrounding suburbs have great reputations both primary and secondary. We had an area we wanted to consider before we came and although we hadn't heard of Leeming it was in our little catchement area. We knwe that we wanted to live south of the river, as I'd been offered a job in Armadale. We managed to get a furnished rental for 12 weeks which pretty much decided that we'd stay here. I find Rockingham/Mandurah beautiful but like Missy too far away for me. I'm 15 mins from the City (yet don't feel I live ontop of it), and 20 mins from Freo and the beach. Certainly some of the places on my list just didn't feel right when I saw them for myself, and I think that's the key, find somewhere temporary and have a good drive around, - a bit like a wedding dress - you'll know the one lol
