Hi Jo

My husband is a carpenter and he is quite well paid...long hours 0630 - 4pm. He is on a Union site which means they get paid better and a lot of other conditions, for example 12 Rostered days off a year on top of annual leave, ambulance cover and travel insurance. My hubby will bring home approx $1400 a week.

He is working for a firm at the moment, however it is very fickle and will pay you off after a few weeks if work is running short. He will never be stuck for work and you get a lot of contacts working on sites. My husband has now decided to get an ABN number which is basically setting up to go out on his own....to try and guarantee a consistent income.

Forgot to add. My hubby was shocked at the standard of joinery they do here....the doorframes are all metal and the finishing is really poor. Most companies do one particular thing, for example, hanging doors..another company will do skirting and another firm will do flooring...a bit odd, but it seems to work.

If I can help with anything, please let me know.
