Wink Anyone out there realised Perth isn't their utopia?

I think a lot of people come here with the expectation that Perth is their utopia (not saying i didn't!). And I think that if you really want it to be, it can be.

But what if realise the grass isn't greener on the other side, and perth doesn't suit your life philosophy and you've spent all your savings coming here?

Has anyone else been in this situation and what is it like going home?

Perth one of those places that folk either love or hate depending on what their expectations are and what they enjoy.
      1. Perth is quieter than other cities and after 8pm suburbia is generally dead with pubs shutting at 9pm being quite normal in parts.
      2. Driving is essential and it does take an age to get anywhere outside you local area.
      3. There is no other majpor cities without flying for 4hrs plus, therefore escaping can be difficult.
      4. Perth and WA is excellent if you enjoy the outdoors and camping etc and don't mind limited boutique activities outside fo the city.
For me personally I like it as there's plenty of adventure to be had.

What exactly don't you like Leedslass?

it's just a big country town where people don't like change.
we have the worst motorway system in the world, the public transport is poor, the shops don't open after dark or on Sundays, it costs up to $11.50 for a pint of beer (nearly 6 quid!!) , we have a Sports Stadium that was built for the 70's, and now it gets dark at 7.30pm in Summer.

the only good things are the weather and the beaches

Be fair, you have to open up some debate on here, otherwise it can have no credibility as a forum. I know you love it here, and I am pleased for you. But a lot of people don’t love it and some honest debate about the downsides as well as the upsides is very useful.

To Leeds lass, I have a love hate relationship, I was doing well recently very well until voted out daylight savings!! It is a very infuriating place at times, as Cheeky Bob says they are very inward looking here, what I would call an Island mentality.

It costs a small fortune to get here and set up, for that reason we have set ourselves a target of 3 years, we have been here just over 1 year. If we go home it has to be the right thing to do, we don't want to be like lot of people who "yo yo" back and forth, we can’t afford that. Be sure you are doing the right thing because we all get on downers and they do pass. Is there a pressing rush to get home or can you tough it out, and try and build up some equity here. It would be very depressing going back to the UK now with no money and trying to get a job, in my opinion.

I don't thinks oits just a WA thing.. folk also say the same thing about QLD about being inward looking and the likes. As cheeky bob said - I can relate to much of it.. Maybe its just that WA is 20years behind the Uk and will catch up evenutually - its just behind rather than backwards.

Help Plumber - not good so far

Been here for over month (not long I know) My husband is a plumber and coming across so many hurdles. If he works as plumber it has to be under direction of someone else, if he wants to start up his own business he has to go back to school for 2+ years. All the adverts seem to say at least 5 years WA experience. ANy UK plumber here he talks to say the plumbing is caveman standard here, he can see that also. At 47 he is getting rather frustrated and probably like other UK plumbers he seems to be over qualified, or the AUstralians don't want to be shown up with their simple skills and appauling workmanship. We knew things were a bit behind/backward here as a lot of people say, but it is beginning to change our minds on staying. Need to make a decision soon what to do stay or go home.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated

Beginning to realise we walked away from a good standard and quality of living, even though I know England has it's problems.
