Looking for work in Perth- hitting the 'local' experience barrier

Hi All

Hoping for some help on hearing how others have overcome the "But you don't have local experience" barrier. I am looking for work in technology Account Management/ Sales Ops/ back office but will consider most things.

Nearly every recruiter I talk to asks what local experience I have, which is nothing...but I do have decades of experience, excellent soft skills nearly all of it gained communicating/ solving problems internationally on a daily basis regarding technology orders worth millions of dollars. I've been told by some of those same recruiters that my CV is good (!?).

Not disclosed to recruiters as is not relevant but my (young) family is still in the UK so my wife can continue to work so at least we have one income but they're not coming out until I can find something (decent?)- so at the moment this is looking to be some time before I see them. Additionally, I changed career to get this Visa which took over a decade so I'm not lacking in dedication.

Any advice?

Many thanks

Paul

PS Also interested in any meet ups/ surfing. Currently in Joondalup but willing to travel.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The first thing to note is that Perth is famous for not having a big IT sector. Even the big companies in Perth have their IT departments over east.

The other thing to remember is that Perth is suffering a economic downturn at the moment.

All you can do is persevere.

Best of luck

I have been looking for a sales rep job for 9 months and have been getting the same response. I have over 20 years experience selling a range of products to different markets and at all levels. When I do get feedback I am told that this is great but the main factor for not getting the job is local experience as I have only worked for 10 months in Australia.

It is frustrating but, as said before, you just have to persevere. Good luck with the job hunt.
