      What do they mean when they say .......?

      Prompted by another thread - there's a whole new lingo to learn when you arrive in Aus. For those of you with Children, you'll find that they pick it up really easily and leave you lagging behind a bit. So to give you a head start i'm hoping that people will add their Aussie Slang to this thread, so you'll be 'in the know' when you arrive.

      My husband still insists that when the shop assistance asks how I am I should really just answer "good thanks", that they're not actually looking to have a whole conversation with me (some habits die hard lol).

      Ambo = Ambulance
      Arvo = Afternoon
      Bottle Shop = Off licence
      BYO= Bring your own (you can take your own drinks to a restaurant)
      Chook = Chicken
      Esky = large cool box
      Fairy Floss = Candy floss
      Grogg = booze
      Icey Pole = Ice pop
      Lollies = sweets

      Bring a plate = if asked to bring a plate you take a plate of food to share, I think English Rose said on the other thread that she took them literally and thought they didn't have enough crockery lol

      When I first started here I was sent on my break mid morning and told to go and have morning tea ... what's that about I thought.

      If you get invited to morning or afternoon tea - take some cake.
