Moving to Perth! Stuff To Do and Things to Remember!

      Hello Perth Poms!

I am delighted to have received an email this morning confirming that my husband (to be) and I are eligible for state sponsorship/residency visas! :)
We are both 26, I work in Adult Education and Training and he is in Maritime Security - I am heading out to Perth from this revolting British weather in early March and he will be following me in May as he's out at sea until then.
So therefore, I have the questionably marvellous job of sorting our amazing new lives out!

I have lived abroad before, having just spent the last 2 years in Malta and found from the moving experience that there was a list of 'to do's, 'not to-dos' and 'dont forgets' that i would definately share with anyone else moving there. I imagine a lot of them will be the similar, but i wonder if any of you could share with us, any of your entries to this list - from 'Before you Leave' , to 'Transit', to 'Arrival', to 'After Arrival'. Even if it seems obvious to you, it may be overseen by us. Thank you in advance :)

Also - would love your advice regarding where to live as neither of us have visited Perth before!
We are going to rent for the first year, would like to be not much further than a short commute from the CBD (max 30 mins), or even in the CBD itself but dont have a preference. Somewhere with a little bit of life nearby where we can socialise, eat out and meet people. Even more wonderful would be close to the beach! Your suggestions would be gratefully received.

In the mean time, I'm packing boxes to ship over (anyone know the cheapest shipping company for about 150kg of boxes?)

I look forward to coming along to any gatherings and socials in March, as I'm going to be very lonely!

Thanks for your comments in advance :)

Good luck with sorting everything out! Hope it all goes well :)

I saw a piece of advice on here earlier saying "consider whether certain items you may take over, will be cheaper to buy once you're over there, rather than ship it over".... seems like a good piece of advice haha. May be somethin you are already doing!

Nothing else springs to mind.. I'm only 21 and moving over with Mum and Dad in the next couple of years! We're in the very early stages so far.

      Em x

Been here two years. Came with a suitcase each for my daughter and I, but we did have rellys over here to stay with till with got ourselves sorted. Finally just about got most things we need. Live quite frugally but I'm not materialistic so as long as my place is nice and tidy that's okay by me.

I live in Kingsley which is about 18 km away from CBD. IF driving in to work in a morning/home in evening it can be horrendous, but it's around 15 - 20 mins at other times of day. It's about 5 mins drive from the coast to BEAUTIFUL Hillarys with the marina etc. Whitfords, Joondalup, Kingsway and Wangara big shopping centres all close by. Lots of smaller shopping complexes even closer for those forgotten items. There are lots of gorgeous areas around Perth but I love it here in Kingsley. Far enough away from the city, but near enough to pop in there on the train, close to beaches and shops.

Relatively expensive but reasonable rents for where we are and what we've got, but it' pretty much the same unless going to the less desirable areas or further inland, more expensive on the coast. I think this area is fantastic. A much sought after area!!

      Good luck with your move.
