We are debating about what to bring in a container so is there any point in bringing our TV with us? I'd be so annoyed it we paid for it to be shipped and then it didn't work!!

Yes, it will work. The power input in Oz is 220 - 240 V AC, 50 Hz, the same as in the UK/IRL. You will need an adapter to convert the plug from UK 3 pin to Australian pin format, but at 3 Euro, it's not going to break the bank. Everything else stays the same...... HDMI, VGA, SCART inputs etc.
Unless you ditch it and buy a 3D TV when you get here. Go on, you know it makes sense...... but probably not a priority !!
Good luck
That's great thanks!! Wouldn't I love a 3D but this TV is less than a year old so not quite ready to part with it.
I've just read on gomatilda.com that the TV WON'T work. We will get picture but the sounds signals are different in Oz so we won't get audio???
That's probably the case - I know they did DAB differently in Oz from the UK.
Depending on the model of TV, you may be able to get updated software for it. Or, and perhaps best/easiest - go and buy a digital TV set-top box for about $30. I'd also consider one that has a PVR (recorder) in it e.g. Tivo as if you're like me you'll be wanting to forward the constant, shouting ads whenever watching something!
It's hard enough remembering my opinions, without remembering my reasons for them...
And if bringing a DVD player/discs, watch out for the difference in Region - DVD's bought here might not play on a player brought from the UK. Depending on the model though the players can usually be "unlocked" easily enough (should be able to find the code on the internet). And if not, a new player might not be too much - and I've read that all DVD players sold in Oz have to be unlocked these days - so will play your UK discs. There may be a warranty issue if unlocking it, but from the reading I did, it's not a problem.
For Blu-Ray, Australia is the same Region as the UK.
Games consoles, Xbox, PlayStation etc are another possible issue.

Thanks Phil, ya we have sky plus and rarely watch live TV so will prob get PVR alright!! I do remember the fifty million ads on aussie tv when I lived there 10 yrs ago! Drove me mental!
On the other hand you could buy a new Tv here, we just picked up a 46" Sony Bravia LCD (LED Backlit) for $700 in Dick Smith
I think that's what we'll end up doing and give my father in law a loan of ours til we may return to Ireland (if we do!)
