What to take to Perth and what not to take to Perth...that is the question!

      I am trying to work out what we could leave in England and really wouldn't be needed over in Perth. Would hate to ship something like our huge american fridge freezer over, only to find that kitchens in Perth tend to have integrated ones already. We intend to rent intially and this would probably be a fully furnished let. Eventually, we intend on buying and its at this point that obviously need to know what to take of our large appliances. The list of uncertainties are;

      American fridge freezer
      Dishwasher
Tumbledryer (although guessing that this is unecessary out there with all the sun)
      Microwave
      Washing machine.

Thanks guys in advance for any help.

      Happy New Year!

      Hi milbony
Apologies, this thread accidentally got stuck in the moderation queue (only just seen it), so bumping it up so you'll hopefully get some replies.

I've seen some lets that come with some/all white goods and some that come with none. I guess it kind of varies.
One thing you might want to do is work out how much it's going to cost to ship/store each item and compare it to cost of new one on arrival. I think the plumbing connections for dishwasher/washing machine are the same and the electrics (except changing the plug) mean they'll probably work OK. You may find the warranty for the items becomes void if you remove them from the country you bought them in.
Personally, and I'm sure others will disagree, I'd sell/leave them behind and buy new in Perth. I'd hate to move in somewhere and then find the fridge I'd lugged from the other side of the world didn't fit.
It's hard enough remembering my opinions, without remembering my reasons for them...

Some really good points here. Also consider that your items may take months to arrive. If your rental place doesn't have them can you do without a fridge or washing machine for months? We sold all of ours and bought crappy ones from Gumtree when we first got here and have now bought better ones in the sales.

It would be a bit of a downer if my lovely and very large fridge freezer didn't fit in our new Australian home and would proberly find myself looking solely at homes to purchase if they could accomodate it in the kitchen!!!

My washing machine and dishwasher I have decided from your replies that I am going to leave behind, as for the tumble dryer...Im hoping I'd have little use for that over in Perth anyhow.

So....thank you peeps, I now won't be taking my large appliances...problem solved. Now gotta whittle down the rest of my belongings .

I use my tumble dryer in winter, probably about 6 times a year. We brought washing machine, tumble dryer and microwave. Now replaced the washer and dryer but microwave is still going strong. We initially stayed in a furnished rental for 3 months, then when we moved it had a dishwasher (which we've since replaced)
Lord make my words sweet and reasonable. For some day I may have to eat them

Is there anything that you shipped to Australia that you wished you hadn't and why?

Clothes. Bought far, far too many. I must have shipped around 30 ties!
Also bought lots of ornaments that we'll probably never display. The one-off pieces of sculpture are fine but there's a lot of stuff that we've realised we're not really that attached to.

My full carbon Fondriest. I didn't realise there was such a massive cycling scene and just thought I'd never use it

Also wished we'd bought some kids shoes - they seem to be difficult to find, limited styles and v. expensive.

Also wished I'd had more time to scan old photo's and load them to a cloud.
      ali and milbony like this.
