Give us a shout when you get here. At IRP we specialise in skilled trades recruitment and labour hire. If you have the right to work then we often have electrician / electrical TA roles available with a number of our clients.

Seek and Indeed are great places to look but it is worth registering with us as we often have roles that we fill without posting job ads on Seek.

Best of look and in the meantime have a look on our website http://www.irp.net.au or follow us on Facebook / LinkedIn just search Industrial Recruitment Partners

Best of look - it is worth the hassle...I've been here 2.5 years now and love it!!

I'm a general electrician also and know i'll have to work as a TA but do you know how long for and whats the first thing i need to do to make myself eligible for work? tax number, white card? sorry for all the questions but I've found it hard to see definitive answers on a lot of the forums

Hi Ryan

I Have just lodged our 190 visa application on thursday for myself, partner and two children and cost $7116. My agent said it is currently taking around 8 weeks for a case officer. I am in the same boat as you really and am struggling to get definate answers on eligibility to work and what i need to start work as you mentioned above, i have also emailed 15 plus Electrical contractors around perth back in december explaining my position and to see if they are looking for any trade assistants and only 1 company replied saying they didn't require any trade assistants, he did say that a better option would be to apply for a provisional WA electrical workers licence but again not sure about how to go about it. When are you hoping to make the move over to WA? and what area are you fancying?. I was hoping to get a job before i went to WA but i think now the best way is just to make the move and hopefully secure one when we get there,

Hi Ryan,

From what I understand you can get your skills matched from the UK but you still have to obtain your licence in WA when you are here.

Have a look at the thread on the sister site pomsinoz it explains what someone else has gone thru.

http://www.pomsinoz.com/forum/western-australia/129548-wa-electricians-license-help.html

Still send your resume (CV) over to service@irp.net.au as we can get you on the system and you can be considered for TA roles whilst building up your experience and gaining the Certification here.

Hope it helps....I don't have many skills to match so I came in on the back of my wife having the skills!!!

Good Luck

Jason, Check out my reply to Ryan - it is for electricians but it may give you some guidance.

Good Luck - there should be plenty of work for Air Con engineers here as there as hundreds of firms!! We don't get many on our books though as we are more the electrical / welding / fitter trades but I'll keep my eye out!!

Hi sorry for late reply, I am hoping June time but I'm not leaving until I have enough money saved and sorted a few things out. I know I have been on Seek and other sites and theres hardly anything out there, I've heard it will only take 4 months to get a WA license but still as yet to find out exactly how. Looked at quite a few areas, Mandurah seems to be a hit with everyone especially on here, Quinns Rocks looked nice to me as well. just waiting on my girlfriend as she is a teacher so she is putting the feelers out to schools, she will basically decide which area by the looks of it ha!

I think you're right about getting there and getting a job, although, I did live in Melbourne for 4 months and found it so hard to get work. I walked to every crane I could see in and around the CBD, applied for job after job and ended up working as a plumber changing water metres ha! I think its all about contacts just to get you in the door and being on with the agencies. Its so annoying because it has picked up so much here and the rates have gone up for Subbys, now there seems to be nothing over there ha. If i do come across anything though regarding college info etc i'll let you know

We were looking at june/july ourselves and have been looking at the same areas really, i emailed the energy licensing company yesterday to find out the options that are available so if they get back to me with anything useful i will pass it on, i find it funny you ended up been a plumber haha, i would quite happily do any job to start with just to get me on my feet, have you taken the vetasses practical ?

Congratulations on getting the visa! mine was granted on the 2nd of July, we have booked flights for December 4th. I have been emailing lots of companies also but no response, I have made a few good contacts there now though and my girlfriends friend of the family works quite high up in gas and oil, he said i should be able to get on with a general sparky company. Polytechnic West have emailed me back to say the course we need is only 3 weeks long for the full license (thats if you have already done skills assessment before arriving) the course is roughly $2500 and runs quite regularly thorought the year. My aim is to book myself on an early course after Christmas then put myself out there once I hold an unrestricted license

I'm also an electrician, we're moving out February.

Bestie85 does this mean if you have a vetassess skills assessment and do this 3 week course, there is no need to do the 1000 hours gap training to get the A licence? It's good news if it is!

would you be able to pm me the email details of who you spoke to at polytechnic west please? Or post it on this thread if you prefer.

I know a few sparks working over there at the moment, they're also saying don't bother contacting the companies till you are in Oz. They're still saying things are busy over there and getting work shouldn't be a problem.

Cheers

Hi guys

Ive been told by the WA Gov site that when we arrive in WA we will need to apply for an EPL (electricians provisional licence) and gain experience that way whilst completing theory and practical exams along the way before we can get our full licence. Trying to find employment at the minute is a nightmare I'm sending tons of emails and getting very little back so far it's really frustrating me haha, has either of you had any good news or advice regarding a job in the last few days? I'm feeling a bit stuck so it's looking like I'm just going to go there on the 21st of August and hopefully find it a bit easier once there. Have you got a suburb in mind yet where you would like to move or is it job depending? Speak soon

Yeah I've read and heard about the long licence process, Bestie85's post suggests we may hopefully not need to do this. I think we still will have to do the gap training. I have been told you can do a 2 week course in Sydney to get your NSW licence then transfer it to WA licence. If I never had kids I'd do that rather than the 5 to whatever months it would take to complete the gap training. Even with the kids it's something we are considering as all the jobs I've seen advertised require the WA A grade licence.

We'll be moving somewhere north of joondalup. Got a few friends up that way, have a 1 month holiday rental booked in butler then will suss out a few areas and hopefully get long term rental around quinns, butler, alkimos etc.

Where you looking to settle? You'll have to keep us informed on how your getting on work wise when you arrive.

cheers

yes mate 100% it is just 3 weeks if you already have an OTSR, if you pm me your email address ill forward the polytechnic one to you. it breaks it all down in that, its too large to paste on here and comes with 3 attachments which tells you everything you have to do, from going to Energy Safety offices on arrival to get your provisional, to costs and dates of courses

I would check again, I would think that will just get you a licence as an Electrical Fitter and you still need to upgrade to a full licence by doing the supervised work.

This is from the Licensing Board WA, http://www.commerce.wa.gov.au/sites/default/files/atoms/files/r098.pdf

I would check direct with them rather than the RTO, some of them will tell you anything to get you to enrol.

Yeah of course I messaged Energy Safety first and they got back to me recommending I get in touch with Polytechnic West. They said as soon as i get there to come to their offices with my passport etc etc and get my provisional, then that I would only have to do the 3 week course at college to gain the grade A because I have undergone a full skills assessment here. He said that the 'up to 12 months' means that you can do it for that long, giving you time to pay or attend your college but can do it quicker if you so wish.

I know its hard to find concrete answers because I have been trawling the net for sometime just like yourself so I don't get caught out or let down. I found a great post on here actually of a lad that did the course some time ago in 3 weeks. I find it hard to believe 4 respected colleges there will make you pay and attend, then pass exams to then receive a fake license at the end. i'll paste his post on here for you to look at

*NOT MY POST JUST COPIED*

I want to share my experience. Just finished ETL course for A-grade licence at Polytechnic West / Balga Campus - Vetassess way.

I walked to Energy Safety in person, with all relevant papers, next day after arrived in Perth. They copied my OTSR, scanned passport and gave me proper form to fill (there is 2 of them, depends which way you are going), then I paid by credit card 109$. They said, they will send the answer within 4 weeks. I called them every week to be sure everything's fine, but as nothing came by then I visited them again. They checked my docs with me in the system and found that one page of OTSR is missing. I could wait in vain for ever, they simply didn't bothered to inform me about it. I emailed missing page same day and a few days later they called me that docs are ready for me to collect.

My advise at this stage: don't leave it with them and trust everything's fine, keep checking it yourself.

In envelope I found Electrical Worker's Permit, valid for 12 months which allowi me to work legally under supervision plus eligibility to enrol to ETL 80 hours course plus list of 4 places I can attend, with contact numbers to responsible for it persons. I called all of them and was lucky to find vacancy at soonest starting one – Polytechnic West / Balga Campus. I paid them a visit same day with letter from Energy Safety, paid 211$ for subsided ( if you have PR visa) course and bought PDF version of books(AS3000 and AS 3008) from their library. They also printed it out and bind for me for 57$ altogether. Another two books: “Design and Install” and “Inspecting and Testing” I got for free when started course.

Course schedule:

Day 1: Ohm's law, parallel circuits

Day 2: First Aid, CPR, Determining cable type and size.

Day 3: Maximum Demand, Voltage Drop

Day 4: Installation's assembly, 2h of theory, 6 hours practise.

Day 5: Motor starting (contactors, star/delta), transformers, different types of lights, mercury, sodium etc. At the end of the day they gave us portfolio to be done over weekend – typical house plan, you have to count appliances, calculate maximum demand, voltage drop, match cables, CBs and design Consumer Unit.

Day 6: Isolation, Testing Equipment , testing installation on dummy boards – theory/practise

Day 7: Performing installation followed by the plan and testing it.

Day 8: Portfolio collection and discussing problems, revision, written multiple choice test, insulation procedures test.

Day 9: Practical exam: Assembling own installation by plan, testing it, testing equipment.

Day 10: Re-exam. If you failed on something before, you can do it again, still within the course.

Everything what is on the exam was earlier on the course. If you carefully listen to tutors you should have no problem with passing the exam. Half of the group passed everything by Thursday, other half came ones more Friday and had to redo only parts they failed first time. After 2 hours everyone was happy.

Course is very well organised, tutors, even if demanding, very nice and helpful. Australian rules are similar to those in UK, but there are still some differences and different practises of doing some things, so it's good to know it before you start working here anyway. That's basically what is this course about.

I was told they will inform ES about results monday, it takes another few days for ES to revise it and someday at the end of next week I can expect call from ES to collect my Licence.

If it's true I will get my A-Grade in 7 weeks since arrive in OZ.

No one has said anything about a fake licence! Only a restricted, how long ago was this post?
