  4. Hi Joanne just wondering how your kids are settling in. We have a boy who is 14 and goes to Carine (just about to leave Yr 9) and 2 much younger ones (5 & 18mths). Our eldest took some time settling in (we have been here since May this year) but has got himself a job and joined the football club, oh sorry soccer! lol. Notice your a Rossendale girl, we are from Rochdale/Oldham. Now living in Karrinyup Sharon
  5. Hi Joanne As Ali said you need to first work out your rental budget as suburbs vary massively on price. Rental market out here was our biggest hurdle. Its very competetive. As a general rule agents wont let you take a property without you attending the open day etc. We stayed in a holiday rental for 4 weeks when we arrived which gave us the time to look about (we arrived May this year). You may know about it already but www.realestate.com.au is a good house sight. We live north of the river so are about 10 mins from CBD by train and are 3 half minutes (in the car) from the beach (sad I know that we know how long it takes). If you have any questions let us all know as it can be a minefield especially when you have a baby to consider as well. Sharon
  6. My husband works on Osbourne Park and we live in Karrinyup so takes him about 15 minutes to get into work. When we arrived we lived in Innaloo, could also try Scarborough, Doubleview but suppose it depends on how much rental you want to pay. Renting can be difficult so do your homework, prob best to have a good read on here as we all sound to have similar experiences. If you have rented at home try and bring a reference from your landlords with you. There is also a martial arts gym on Osbourne Park. Not sure what its called, sorry. Its on Scarborough Beach Road which runs through Osbourne Park. Good Luck with your move
  7. Hi Been here in Perth since May this year. Spoke to the local high school (Carine) and was told that we couldnt enrol our son until we had the tennancy agreement. As soon as we had that they interviewed us and he was given a place the following week. All went smoothly. I would strongly suggest that if you bring any work books that your child had in the UK. We have had a bit of messing about placing our son into the appropriate 'sets'. Apparently they could have used his work books to assess.
  8. Son just started in Yr 9 @ Carine High School and so far they have been excellent. A ridiculous amount of Maths homework (2 hrs per night) but apart from that excellent. They wouldnt see us before we had the tennancy agreement. We signed the agreement on a Sunday afternoon, had a meeting with school on Thursday and he started the following Monday! Not sure if you have younger children but its the same with primary schools. The 'spare time' between arriving and starting school is important as it does take some time to settle into life here so that time can be used to thier advantage! Also renting is a competetive gam here, with numerous people wanting the same house especially in good school areas. All I can tell you is our son is in Carine and we live in Karrinyup. The western australia education site is a really useful place to have a read if you havent already! Good luck
  9. Hi All Could someone please let me know how we register with a GP (and recommend one if possible please). We live in Karrinyup Many thanks Sharon
  10. Morning Tony We have been here in Perth now since 23rd May and are just about to sign a rental agreement in Karrinyup. Renting here is incredibly competetive. Have a look on www.realestate.com.au if you havent already. Houses are listed quite frequently with details of their open times. If no open times are published ring the agent to register your interest. The open days are interesting shall we say. All the properties we have looked at there have been anything up to 18 other families looking at the same time, its survival of the fittest. The agents wont take an application from you unless you have attended so you cant short cut it. When you decide to make an application you have to make it as inviting to the owners as possible. Maybe increase the weekly rent they are asking for or offer to put up ??? months rent in advance instead of the standard 2 weeks (that is in addition to the month bond/security). Not sure where you will be working but we were looking at Rockingham for my husband to drive up to work (Osbourne Park). Doesnt look that far on the map but it is some distance, I didnt appreciate the vastness of the country! Also not sure if you have children but you cant register them into school until you have a signed tennancy agreement. Hope this helps, have learnt alot along the way so if we can be of any help please let us know. Sharon
  11. Morning Helen Arrived in Perth 23rd May '12 and living in Karrinyup (or will be when our rental agreement has been signed on Sunday). We have 2 boys (14 &4) and a 1 year old girl. Some things have been plain sailing and have also had bumpy times over the last few months so have learnt and are still learning. Your questions no doubt will be endless so if I can be of any help please just let me know Sharon
  12. Morning All Anyone had experience of either of Dinki Di or Mullberry Tree (or anyother - oh Tiny Beez are full). Everyone really friendly in both places but still have my reservations. Our daughter is 12 months old. All good/bad/indifferent opinions would be massively appreciated Thanks Sharon
  13. Hi All, We have been granted our visa today so the flights are booked for 2 weeks time. Have been booked into a holiday home (innaloo) for about 7 weeks till our furniture arrives. We have 3 children with us (14, 4 & 1). Schooling is our first priority and then we can look for rental houses based on catchment areas. We need a non catholic high school and Catholic primary school. Slightly confused on the age that they will start/year entry. Our 14 year old is currently in year 9 and our 4 year old started in reception class last September. I have read somewhere that it depends on the month they were born. (14 year old - just turned 14 a few days ago, our 4 year old is not 5 till end of August) Any advice on good schools, areas to live (and avoid like the plague) would be massively appreciated. Need to be living no more than 45 min drive to CBD but apart from that no specific preference to north or south of perth centre. Sorry all I've rambled on a bit but got all sorts flying around my frazzled brain x:arghh:
