  1. Hi Nick, Plastering is similar in many ways but the trade is divided into two: Solid Wall plastering and Fibrois Plastering. Im a solid wall plasterer which means mostly render, skim and acrylic texture coating. fibrous plastering is more like dry lining in uk, But most work is just ceilings and very little wall work. plastering most like uk plastering is Solid wall. if your here for a bit, I'm more than happy to show you. I'm in suburb up from you in Iluka
  2. you will piss it mate, then wonder what all the fuss is about. good luck
  3. I'm in joondalup. gods own country here mate. you won't go to far wrong up this neck of the woods.
  4. plastering is divided into two trades. solid wall and fibrous plastering. solid wall plasterers work mainly rendering and skimming and fiborous plasterers mostly fix ceiling boards and flush like dry lining in UK. I'm a plasterer and very rarely touch a ceiling as this is normally done by dry liners only. only skim the odd concrete ceiling maybe once a year. products out here are very old fashioned. 95% of internals are float and set. with cement and lime. no hardwall or multi finish out here mate. proper graft I'm afraid as lots of rendering etc. skim is lime putty and a ball ache.
  5. Hi Jimmy. I'm a plasterer from England. been here seven years. any info on plastering I'm happy to help. PM me if you like. I'm always in need of a hand from time to time so when you get here I cant promise anything but you never know.
  6. Plenty of work at the moment. lots of new houses being built all over Perth. So doesn't matter what area you live, However to me it seems there are more Poms in wet trades in the Northern suburbs. Most new Poms in the plastering trade find it easier to get work via other established poms. Plastering is much harder out here physically if you join a house bashing gang they tend to be run by slave drivers who tend to employ new migrants who don't know anyone or backpackers (stay clear!!) best to go down a local pub on a Friday between 2-4pm. look for a pommie plasterer and say you could help for cheap for couple of days and in return they can show you the differences etc. although it will take a few weeks to get used to the ways. Never seen a derby/feather edge being used here although they can be helpful if a wall has no suction and been raining for weeks.
  7. Some plastering tools from UK just aren't needed here. I would suggest just bring his hawk and trowel, mixing drill. all screading type stuff is different. When you say he's a plasterer do you mean solid plasterer as opposed to flusher (dryliner)? Any advise on plastering I'm happy to help as it's very different.
  8. Absolutely agree with this. There's just something about SOR that doesn't feel right for me anyways. My mate has just built a house in Alkimos, which I reckon is going to be a lovely suburb when it's finished. also relatively close to Butler train station and only short drive to Joondalup Shopping centre.
