Urgent Updates re shipping Pets ..

      URGENT UPDATE - Shipping Pets

      Dear PIO & PP members

The Australians have now classed UK as Rabies well controlled rather than rabies free. Which means that pets travelling from UK to Australia after Jan 1st 2012 now have to have pre travel rabies work. Pets have to have a rabies vaccination within 12 months of the flight date and a rabies vaccination at least 60 days before the flight, but ideally 6-12 months. They then need a rabies blood sample ideally at least 5 months before their flight date. It can be less than 5 months before their flight date, but they will have to spend longer in Australian quarantine if that is the case. The pets are allowed out of quarantine 180 days after the date of the rabies blood sample or 30 days after they land whichever is the greater.

Basically - if you are thinking of going to Australia with your pet, start planning early. If you are planning to go in Jan or Feb next year - either try to send your pet before Jan 01st 2012 or be prepared for pets flight to be delayed or the quarantine stay be extended.

...and don't I know it!!!! I had my dog all ready to fly out on 4th January for a 30-day quarantine period (without having the rabies vaccine)...I then gets a call from my guy at Airpets last week to tell me that my pet needs a rabies vaccine and he could be in quarantine for upto 4 months...so I have changed his quarantine period so that he goes on 19th December, so he doesn't have to have a rabies vaccine!!! Phew, glad that one is sorted out - couldn't let my baby be in quarantine for more than 30 days...that's long enough!!!!

Dont' panic, I haven't even applied for my visa yet but I have still booked in my pooch. I was in the same position last week when I had to change my date for Perth Quarantine and I thought I would have to leave my baby behind, but my pet agent advised that I could book Sydney if Perth was unavailable. Luckily, I managed to get a place at Perth. But, if you are stuck, you could maybe try Sydney and get your pet flown over to Perth once quarantine has ended. There is a company called "Dogtainers" (www.dogtainers.com.au) who do domestic flights within Australia for pets - you can get a quote online. Apparently, Sydney quarantine is much bigger than Perth and does not get as booked up as Perth. I know it's more of a cost and your pet will be far away from you, but it is a Plan B!!! Hope this helps

Hello, thank you for your advice, thats what we have decided to do, my brother lives in Sydney so its no problem for amber to go there as he can visit her in quarantine. I can also fly to Sydney on staff concessions so this will save a lot of money on my flight from UK & if I fly from Sydney to Perth with amber its approx $200 on virgin australia for a dog.
However we now have anther problem, amber had lepo in her anual booster in April.......omg....I feel sick that she is going to fail her blood tests :(

My Charlie too had his booster in June (incl. the Lepo injection!!!) - I am thinking the same thing!!! My vet asked if I knew I was going to Oz when I had his booster done, but I didn't so I can't do much about it now!! Oh well, only the blood tests will tell!! I hope yours are ok when you get them done. I am taking my dog to the vets on 22ndd November to get his blood tests done! Nerve racking time!!!

It is, im getting so stressed about sending Amber & the cost involved, do you know how much it costs for the 30 day quarantine?
I think we are emigrating at a similar time to you, we also want to live near Baldivis but will settle for any rental we can find.

      Hi Kerry,

The 30-day quarantine is about $1400 (£950). You pay this prior to the animal being released. I have settled for Baldivis as I will be commuting to Perth daily and I have heard that Baldivis is very nice and has close links to Rockingham (which is fab, great shopping centre and beaches!). It is also not too far from Mandurah, which I also love. I have sorted out my accomodation as I have heard that rental properties are hard to get hold of as many apply for the same properties at once. Schools seem good too. I will be living near to Settlers Hills Primary School (they also have after school care at Tranby College, which is across the road from the primary school). I can't wait to get out there, just the dog to sort and we will be ready to jump on that plane!!!! Good luck with your move. Maybe we will bump into each other whilst walking around Baldivis! Take care, Michelle.
