      STOP thats illegal!

Just wondered if anyone else had done things, or nearly done things when they arrived and then found out actually its either illegal or frowned upon. I have 3
      1. You are not allowed to park facing oncoming traffic.
      2. You are not allowed to drink alchohol in a public place, e.g. beaches and parks, and if caught you can be fined.
      3. You are not allowed to leave children unattended in a car at any time.

Does anyone else have any to share?

I always liked Sheffield's bye-law on public alcohol consumption - it was only an offence to not stop when asked by a copper. Meant you could enjoy a nice tin of M&S G&T in the park at lunch, but the police had powers to stop any antisocial alcohol consumption. I've seen a fair amount of beer/wine being drunk in public here, I suspect you'd have to be causing a nuisance for anyone to really get bothered or the police to issue a fine. But I'll watch my step. Mind you, I am finding the whole you-can-only-buy-beer-in-a-bottle-shop thing a minor inconvenience.
I've not heard of any other weird laws as yet. I'll bet there's loads though!

I just thought of another one. If you are going to have a paddling pool that has water over the height of 12 inches then you have to have pool fencing. Thats one that could easily catch young familes out Its all sensible stuff but, not everybody knows especially when you first arrive.

It didnt occur to me, when my 10 year old asked to stay in the car, whilst we went into Bunnings, because he finds it boring. At least now I can say no its against the law so you HAVE to trudge around with me

Mine is only 2 so probably wouldnt leave him in the car anyway just in case, mind you I have left him in the car while I went to the ATM but he was only like 5 ft from me. I have seen older kids left in the car while parents have been in shops etc, sometimes I guess it is just less hassle to leave them there. Especially if they can look after themselves.

It's illegal to not shorten every word, mainly nouns or names and add an 'e' or 'o'
Example "Later on today I shall be heading over to Stephen's brother's house for a barbecue. He spent a fortune on a new one and it's fantastic" (illegal)
"This arvo I'm off to Stevo's rellies for a barbie. New one cost 'im bikkies but it's a beaut" (legal)*

It's socially unacceptable to keep harping on about "in the UK we did it this way" etc

Driving with your arm out of the window can get you pulled over (and likely fined)

You'll need a license for everything

      *may not actually be illegal

It's not happened to me but it was a first hand account. It was something like "driving with an obstruction likely to cause injury to self or others" to which he apparently responded "You are having a fecking laugh aren't you? It's just my arm".

I got pulled over for not wearing a seatbelt. We'd only been here a week and I've never been pulled over in the UK.
My 8 year old son was terrified they were going to cart me off to prison and was absolutely besides himself with fear. I largely had to ignore the cop and try to reassure my son and eventually she gave up, came round to the side of the car and sat with him for 5 minutes to calm him down. She was brilliant and fair play to her, she let me go when I was clearly in the wrong.
