Hope everyone had a great day yesterday. I thought it was pretty surreal, very memorable.
By midday we were in the blistering 40deg heat on Sth Beach and by 8pm, shivering with the chill wind.
We watched the Skyworks from South Perth - Sir James Mitchell Park.
There were fewer people than expected. About 6.30 a breeze picked up from the North and carried with it a gross and tumultuous thunderhead which engulfed the skyline with a sinister mood.
By 8pm rain had bought a cooling respite to the muggy closeness of the evening and as the fireworks exploded with splendorous colour, mother nature accepted the challenge and a battle between Earth and Sky commenced.
The delight of the opening barrage from Earth gave way to mesmerisation as the Sky responded - the force of the wind and rain sought to distract the crowds and the Sky withdrew her sword and flashed its lightening brilliance menacingly from all around.
By 8.15 I wrapped my arms around my shivering son, our clothing stuck to our bodies and water ran over our faces. "When will it end?" he asked and at one point it may have felt like never.
The climax was worth waiting for, our endurance rewarded; Earth gave up its all and, with a final blast that rumbled through our bodies, a relentless barrage of spectacular light, sound and colour, it beat the Sky into submission.
As the spectators made their way up the hill, away from the shore, the final ripostes from the Sky seemed like an angry child struggling to comprehend defeat. We all knew who had won. What a spectacular evening.
