      Jellyfish sting

Whilst swimming off Leighton beach today I was stung by a jellyfish on the inside of my forearm and across my shoulder.
Felt a tingle like a nettle rash at first then it just got steadily more painful. It was weird because there were no marks for about 30 minutes then just a raised rash. I ignored it while in the water but when we got out and into the sun it really started to burn and my arm went numb. I went into the toilets and wee'd on it and the relief was instantaneous. Obviously I couldn't reach my shoulder so that continued to burn.
We cycled home and my skin got really tight and felt like it would split if stretched. Some more 'home remedy' and after an hour it went down.
That was about 1pm and now at 4.40 all is well.
My son was with me and he was protected by his sun suit so, top tip of the day, to avoid jellyfish stings wear a sun suit and if stung, find a toilet. You may not smell nice but it will neutralise the sting and ease the pain*.

*I'm not a doctor and have no medical training so ignore this. Seek medical advice unless like me you're an idiot. Don't wee on yourself in public, there are clubs for things like that (I'm told).

Always take a bottle of white or black vinegar wth you when you are going to the beach! And/or some pure lavender oil, as that is also something you can put straight on burns and stings without diluting. It is also an antiseptic , look up its qualities on any naturepathic website.
When purchasing block out or suncream try to go for the 50+. Woolworth` s have one, which is perfect for this, and it has a good reputation. No use buying some that are soooo expensive that don`t work. There sun screen products have always got good ratings by Choice Magazine and research (company does comparisons on anything and ev erything) They put a magazine that you can read at your local library.

I got a jelly fish sting some time ago, and was advised by a pharmacist to put a bicarb of soda paste on it. It did help, but it was *** painful at the time. The pain seems way disproportionate to the rash! Now mine was in a place I couldn't have wee'd on anyway

Always take along some vinegar...lots of sting relief products on the market...some junk..some not even safe to use..Queensland Med and the Resuscitation Council recommend 5% acetic acid not urine...household vinegar runs closer to 2.9% acetic...found this product in the US..Ocean Care Solutions Jellyfish sting relief spray..full 5% lotion look and feel to it..stays where you spray it..worked within minutes and no welts shortly after than...1oz spray bottle fit in my pocket..I e mailed the company..they have a Man o War kit as well and was told the kits are in Australia now being tested on the Blue Bottle...stay tuned I guess...keep your sunny side up and take care..BL

Cheers for the heads-up, Portlaunay. Will maybe head to woolies and get some vinegar to keep in the beach bag. I'd find it difficult to wee on my shoulder, also!
