Student Visas

Good Afternoon,

Can I ask the group for information regarding the Student Visa route to Oz? How has it worked out for you? Life after studies? Job prospects? A risk too Far?

I know that I will need to support myself and family along with the 2 boys education.

Thank you for your advice.

David

It has been done successfully, but rarely. The problem is passing a skills assessment afterwards.

Most occupations require a skills assessment that includes 2-3 years experience post qualification. If you study for two years full time, at an appropriate level, you could qualify for a further visa, but in order to get the required experience, you would need to hope you could start a job in the occupation immidiatly. And I mean immediately.

Hence, the vast majority of people who study in Oz even at degree level have to leave afterwards.

The he other big issue would be age. I believe you are 49? Which in a years time means all permanent skilled visas would be out at the total cut off is 50. An employer sponsored permanent visa is possible after 50 as long as you have been in Oz for 4 years on a 457 visa and earning a minimum of $132,000 a year

So, in a nutshell, it is theoretically possible, but given the risks personally I wouldn't do it.

Thank you for taking time out to answer this question.

My wife would be the one doing the student visa, she is wanting to go into teaching. We have family in Perth which is a bonus.

As the partner of the visa holder you would also only be able to work for 20 hours per week (once they have started their course) which isn't a lot for a family to live off for the length of time it would take your wife to do her teaching degree. The job market isn't the greatest at the moment, it may be a safer option to do the degree in the UK

Does she already hold a degree? If so, in what subject? What level of teaching is she interested in - primary or secondary?

Teaching in Australia is greatly over subscribed unless you have an Early Childhood component to your Primary degree that enables you to teach at Childcare facilities. Secondary teachers who specialist in Maths and Science at the top level might have a chance of a position. Education Support teachers, and especially those with Conductive Education qualifications, are needed in WA. Otherwise it isn't looking good for teachers.
