  1. Hi, I've just been looking at the repayment thresholds for student loans when working in Aus (repayments kick in around $44k) and it seems they want monthly payment, but make no mention of how to pay them from Australia. How do folks here make the payments? Do the SLC have an Australian account you can set up a regular transfer too - or does it have to be (expensive relative to the fairly small amount being sent?!) international transfers? Is it possible to make an lump-sum payment for the entire year? Coming over for my recce soon (only a few weeks now!) so thinking about the sorts of outgoings I'm looking at and what that will mean when it comes to bargaining over salary.
  2. I don't know abt biology specifically, but in general terms UWA is considered to be quite good
  3. Pegg - bogans are basically the antipodean relatives of the British "chav".
  4. Yeah, I really wouldn't want something new. Having something to get my teeth into for decorating and playing with the outdoors space too is part of the dream. If I move in and don't change anything, I don't really feel it's mine. That said, with the exception of those god-awful lights, most of it I could live with
  5. http://www.realestate.com.au/property-house-wa-yanchep-117871311 Got to be this - views of the ocean to die for, near the beach, tons of space to lay out a garden to relax in and dogs to play in (maybe a natural pool too?), far enough from the city to be peaceful, but not full blown rural. Paradise
  6. Counting sleeps? Yep - just a bit! Bit of a shame I'll be in town pretty much in the depths of winter, but if you can love the place in the wet/cloud/cold, you can love it anytime I'm staying with a friend in South Perth, so very convenient for seeing all that's on offer, and really near the river to boot
  7. I know no one will care, but I just booked my recce, into Perth for mid-July! Yay! Sooooo excited :)
  8. Thanks for your take on things, guys. Having looked through the form, I do feel more confident about it. Fingers crossed, cometh the hour all will be fine
  9. I wonder if anyone can give me a heads up on the health screening situation these days? I know it involves a chest x-ray, which I'm really not worried about (no TB, non-smoker, no asthma or anything similar) but I wondered if there is anything more mundane that could be an issue? I'm a little overweight (though not very), so I'm not sure if a moderately high BMI can be a disqualifier? Also, do the health screening disqualifiers change frequently? I'm not intending to put in an application till later this year, but I do want to be sure I've got all my bases covered in advance. Thanks
  10. All the visa charges are extortionate Also some just went up this yr by 50% in one go! A lovely way to make us feel welcomed and integrated!
  11. I'm still in the uk, and find talking to perth friends, time diff is the killer. As a result, we mostly have email "conversations", and the occasional skype or fb chat. Just be glad its perth and not east coast, as then time diff just gets absurd. Never been aware of network quality issues, but most people i know are on or getting NBN
  12. But to come back to main point... Is there any actual benefit derived from retaining dual citizenship? Im not sure I'd want to unless there were actual material costs/benefits invilved, i.e pension rights from uk NI contributions
  13. Thanks for the heads up with the 457. I didn't know it was bound to one employer - definitely one to avoid. As for qualifications, the list does specify ordinary school teachers and EFL teachers separately, and EFL teachers usually do three years uni (bachelors) plus a seperate training course (CELTA), and the aussie employers are usually happy with that, so I wasn't expecting the immigration guys to throw a spanner in those works I will double check this with the accrediting body in Canberra and post my findings back here, so anyone else following knows the score...
  14. Hi, New to posting here, though I’ve been lurking for a while! Anyway, hope you can bear with a few questions of mine – probably the first of many… I am currently studying a CELTA EFL teaching qualification here in the UK, and I’m hoping to move over to Perth in future and teach there. I also have a languages-based bachelors degree, and a bit of teaching experience, and I have an additional season of teaching lined up next summer to add to it. I’m in my early 30s, native English speaker with no health problems and no partner or dependents. British citizen. What is the employment situation like for EFL teachers in Perth? Does the AMEP (Adult Migrant English Program for non-English native speakers) support much EFL employment? I’m particularly interested in working with AMEP, though general information on the purely private schools as well is most welcome. What visas are worth considering? So far I’ve been looking at the class 187 and class 457, but am I missing anything obvious? Are language schools generally willing to sponsor/nominate? EFL teaching comes up on the federal skilled work list (at least it did on the last one!), but not the WA one. Do EFL teaching salaries in Perth cover/reflect the higher cost of living and renting than on the east coast? Is there anything in particular schools over there look for? Is there anywhere in particular they advertise for staff, or is it best just to Email them or call in face to face next time I’m over there? Finally, is there anything here that sounds patently ridiculous and stupid to even contemplate? If so, I’d rather know now!
