Sending boxes from UK to WA

Well boxes have arrived in Brisbane. They are in Customs etc and once cleared will be delivered to the Gold Coast to my son. Seemed easier to send them direct London to Brisbane instead of London to Perth and then me getting it over to the Goldie. So far we are very impressed with PSS from the beginning up until now. Let you know when unpacked how it all travelled.

Just arrived in WA! Need advice

I agree with Baggytrousers (gotta love that name!), most of West Perth is offices, private medical establishments, and very few residential properties, but just moving up the rail line one suburb to Subiaco gives you so many options. As the economy here is still very much on a downer, there seem to be a lot of rentals around, so hopefully you can pick up something easily. Subiaco PS also has a very good reputation. Let us know how you go.

    Recommendations for a shipping company

We have just shipped some inherited personal items from London to Queensland with PSS and cannot fault them.

Has anyone applied for citizenship lately?

Well whether you think there is a cash grab or not, at least the Citizenship came through. Just get that Aussie passport asap!!
  5. As I understand it, if you over assess the points you have, your application is automatically rejected. So be very careful.

    Renovating... help!!

We bought our house 28 years ago when we moved to Perth from UK. It was a very basic house but in a good street and suburb. So we renovated and we have loved living here. Our kids have grown up here and were schooled here. But life has majorly changed for us over the last couple of years and we seriously thought about selling up and moving on to Queensland to join family. However we now realise that Perth is where we want to be. So we need to renovate. We have a serious kitchen/family area reno happening in the next few weeks, but we are now looking at bathroom and whole house reno. Does anyone have any recommendations for bathroom/ laundry renovators/Decorators etc.

    Renovating... help!!

Certainly can and I am very impressed with the outcome. It has been a nightmare at times and at one point I seriously questioned why we were replacing all the flooring at the same time when all the furniture apart from beds were outside under tarps! Worse than moving actually at that point! Just the bathroom to go but having a few months break to unpack and get settled with everything else before we head in that direction!

    open new account from UK

@pegg do bear in mind that the interest rate in Australia at the moment is almost non-existent. It might be better to open a new account in UK and just keep topping it up until you are ready to move over.
  10. So my kitchen and family room reno starts next week and I am going to be without a kitchen, and also have no furniture as the whole flooring in the place is being ripped up and replaced with planking. It seemed a good idea at the time as we renovated when we moved in 28 years ago and it is so tired and desperately needs updating. But it wasn't until today as I packed away the last of the kitchen stuff, that I thought, how can I feed us while this is underway? I have put the microwave, kettle and electric frypan and a few plates, cups, cutlery etc in the laundry as this will be our temporary kitchen. The fridge/freezer will still be around thankfully. Friends have offered to feed us dinner some nights, and breakfasts and lunches are easy, but eating dinner out often will be so expensive (as if this reno hasn't already gone way over budget), so I am looking for easy meals I can cook on the barbeque (if the winter weather is accommodating), or in the electric frypan. Please stun me with all your brilliant ideas..... my brain is fried from organising all this, packing up so much from a kitchen and 4 rooms, and now project managing the whole issue!

Sorry Pegg I can't help you as banking things have changed so much since my migration journey 30 years ago. Hopefully others will come along with recommendations or idea.

No kitchen for 2 weeks.... how to cook?!

Got that going today with a Jamie Oliver Lamb Shanks with red wine and herbs thingy happening..... smells so good.... will freeze what is leftover. Really enjoying the change to our normal cooking and eating pattern. As we are a Low Carb house, I have come across some great recipes on the Diet Doctor website too that can be cooked in a slow cooker or on a barbie.

    Renovating... help!!

Rossmoyne is a beautiful quiet riverside suburb on the Canning River, with Leach Highway on the southern border. Willetton, Bullcreek, Riverton, Parkwood are all close neighbours.

No kitchen for 2 weeks.... how to cook?!

Thanks FOL! I have the friend's list sorted, and then had a brainwave last night. So today sees me batching cooking curry, bolognese, chille con carne, and I am going to freeze portions and just heat in the microwave. We dont eat rice or pasta, so naan, crusty bread, corn chips etc will work out well. Feels good giving the old kitchen a final workout over the weekend.

Thanks FOL - I am in Rosmoyne so quite a distance from Joondalup and have already sourced an electrician.

    Renovating... help!!

I prefer to use local tradies and not any of the big companies because of past issues. I have found an electrician recommended by a couple of friends, so going with him, but still looking for a gas fitter/plumber, and tiler.
  19. There is an Overseas Qualification Unit in Perth. https://migration.wa.gov.au/contact/general-migration-support/overseas-qualifications-unit I think they may be able to help you, or at least point you in the right direction. Let us know how you get on.

    Renovating... help!!

Yes I do get this and actually got the cabinet maker for the kitchen units from there. If the install goes well, I am considering using him for the bathroom cabinetry as well, but I am looking for electrician, plumber, tiler as well.
  21. Since you were here last, so much has changed with the whole economics in WA. It is a state in financial crisis in some ways as property prices are falling, there are less people looking for work as people are moving out of the state, so there are more rentals readily available at lower costs than would have been the situation when you were here last. No longer is there a long queue of potential renters turning up to an open house rental, and rental prices are falling. Personally, even if I was able to lock something in from abroad, I wouldn't, as you can get some really good deals now as so many investors have empty properties. Perhaps book a holiday rental/AirBnB for a month and take it from there. Just a suggestion.

Sending boxes from UK to WA

Thanks everyone. We decided to use PSS. Boxes being picked up in London today and I will let everyone know how long it takes to transport them, the condition they arrived in, and how good the service was.

House and pet sitting in Perth

There are House sitting/ Pet sitting websites that you might like to register on. This is a service that a lot of people are looking for, but they are obviously concerned about security and honesty. Perhaps registering with an on line agency that verifies you, might be the way to go.

    Eaton / Bunbury

I have friends who emigrated in 2007... they lived in Perth for a while but gravitated to the south west of WA for every holiday they had. Three years ago they moved down to Bunbury and absolutely love it. They are renting currently, but looking to buy land and build their dream house. Initially they had issues finding work in their fields, but by retraining and being broad of mind workwise, they are both doing well. Life is slower once you get out of Perth, and you need to be up for anything if you really want to get out there and make a go of it in the south west.
