Any Secondary School teachers had success.....

Morning all,

Have any Secondary School teachers had any success in securing work prior to arrival in WA?

The 190 VISA means I would basically be leaving a secure job in the UK with potentially no employment upon arrival in Australia. (although reading the posts on here it looks as though relief/supply work would be available)

I wondered how many teachers on here managed to secure employment sponsorship for their visa prior to arrival and have any information / advice as to how they went about it?

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks in advance,

Ryan

Hi Ryan, Welcome to PP!

I don't have any answers for you but wanted to say hi. I am secondary school teacher too in the UK. I am applying through my OH on a 190. From what I have read on here, it can be tough getting a position in WA. Firstly you must have done a 4 year Degree, if only a 3 year you have to do an additional year of training over there. Thankfully, I have that. Then it depends on what subject you teach. Someone said if you do art there are masses of unemployed art teachers already. However, if you teach maths or science you will have a better chance. What do you specialise in? I am art (or dear) and technology (Textiles and Food) so hopefully they may be more in demand. Not even sure if they have them on the curriculum.

Good luck. Let me know what you find out.

Hi akasully,

This 4 year degree course thing is confusing. I'm pretty positive that if you have for example a 3 year sports science degree with the extra year PGCE at university it satisfies the entrance requirement. (From that you can tell I am a PE teacher)

i have 9 years experience and am currently head of department at a school in London. We are just beginning the process of researching etc..... so kind of picking up as much info as possible with a view to a 2/3 year plan to get out to Australia.

Let me know if you find anything useful out and I will certainly do the same.

kind regards,

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

The degree plus PGCE makes sense. I haven't actually looked at the requirement for sponsorship as doing ours through OH 's job. My info just came from other threads on here. Maybe they had 3 year education degrees and not the PGCE route. I have a 4 year degree plus the PGCE, covered either way!

All the best, keep me posted.

Before you can teach in either a private or state school in WA you have to be registered with the Teachers Registration Board of WA. http://www.trb.wa.gov.au/ Great info on here about registration and the required qualifications. Basically though you have to have 4 years of university education. This can equally be a 4 year Bachelor of Education, a 3 year degree topped by a 1 year PGCE. Art teachers, Food Technology teachers, Phys Ed teachers, Library teachers are not in a shortage situation at the present time in Perth, but with the ageing workforce of baby boomers, I am sure that situation will change in a few years. If you are prepared to teach out of the metro area around Perth and go to some of the more isolated towns in the state you might however have more of a chance of finding employment. This isn't for everyone of course and some of the towns can be very challenging.

Thank you for that info. Very useful. Do you know if Textiles Technology is in demand? Are you in Education too?

No Textiles Technology is not in demand at all. It comes under the Art banner usually here and not many state schools have Art Specialists these days. The situation is slightly different in private schools though, especially the Catholic Education sector. I was in HR recruitment in the Education sector until I retired recently, so my knowledge is current.

Thanks for the honest 'warts and all' insight. I always kept dreaming of a career change. Looks like this may force my hand. Will just need to see if OH can work a bit harder so I can be a lady of leisure! :biglaugh:
