YorkieFamily
Hi All, Does anyone need a hardworking Management Accountant? We hope to be moving out in August. Steve
alant
Hi Steve, I'm a Management Accountant too; we are also flying out in August - where in Perth are you heading? Have you had a look at the job market in Perth? I have been speaking to some agents and the messages are different...some say that it's a saturated market with plenty of candidates but not enough roles but should pick up after the election in September and others say with my skills & experiences I should have no problem securing a role. What they all do seem to agree on is that it's unlikely that I'll get a job before we leave - they say that as Perth is a smaller city compared to the other Australian cities, employers (apparently) prefer to speak face-to-face with prospective employees. That's not going to stop me applying for roles though!!
Adjutant
Once you have an arrival date it's much easier to have specific conversations with recruiters about roles. http://www.seek.com.au is a great source of jobs. A lot more firms are also recruiting directly, rather than go through agencies so approach them directly as we'll. i had applications in before I left and had a couple of 'chats' with companies before I flew out and face to face interviews for a few days after I arrived. I was fortunate enough to get an offer at the interview 3 days after arriving, so it was a combination of research and luck. pThe market has plateud out a bit over the last year, so salaries not as high and many mining companies reducing staff. Saying that many companies are taking the opportunity to improve systems and processes after rapid periods of growth, so if you have a systems accounting or finance transformation projects background that could help. Good luck

Hi I am in Perth now, and im afraid its not good for accountants at the moment. There is high interstate migration from the Eastern States, and it makes it difficult for a non-Australian to compete. The job shortage in Aussie is mainly about skilled labour & trade type positions. Professionals arent in high demand. There are a small number of positions and a high number of candidates, so employers understandably are being very specific as to what they require. Im ACCA qualified, which isnt well known here and is often thought of as "some funny foreign qualification" Sad but true. IF CPA and ACCA can put their differences aside and agree a mutual recognition agreement things would be a little easier. Im suited to commercially focused roles, and there is a severe lack of suitable jobs for me. A recruiter told me that employers are looking for someone ticking 9 or even 10 out of ten boxes, and there are enough candidates that they are getting that. Somebody with a more specific background in relation to a particular role may have better luck. At the moment, systems & analysis type roles seems to the most prevalent on seek.com.au, in mining, engineering & building industries. I have seen Financial Controller, Finance Manager type roles, but employers seem to prefer someone who was trained in the Aussie system. Also, Perth is a bit parochial, and it took me ages to get my first job here. You will often hear that employers need "local experience". Its silly but true. However, you can dump your accounting career, and earn the same salary if not more driving a truck on the mines(if you know someone who can get you in ) ! Sorry to be a wet blanket, but its best to know beforehand. When emigrating, always hope for the best & plan for the worst. Ideally you should be able to self finance for about 6 months living expenses, just in case things don't pick up soon.

It's better to be informed ! But it would be best to have some finances behind you, especially as this means you can travel around while your job applications are pending(Make sure you make it up to Kalbarri). You'll never regret coming to Perth, and the learning how things work is all part of the fun !

We're in a similar situation to Beandownunder so was reading this thread and feeling a bit anxious. There has been a lot of negative posts about finding work yet we're also being advised it will be difficult until you're actually there. So hard decisions ahead but got to give a go or we'll always be saying what if?
alant
Thanks for your honesty Smidsy....it's better to have a reality check before you go so you can adjust your expectations once you get there! I'm CIMA qualified so not sure if this will make a difference in Perth. I have former work colleagues, who are also CIMA qualified but live on the east coast and they said that they had no issues securing a role (they do not have permanent residency status but employer sponsorship)
