Points Test, State Sponsorship, IELTS advice needed please....

Hi all

I am looking for any advice from anyone basically! I have been wanting to go to Australia for many years now and finally think I'm in a position to do so. I am 42, a social worker with three years post-qualifying experience and my sister and her family live in Perth. I have all the paperwork ready to go off to the AASW for my skills assessment and hopefully, if that comes back positive, I can submit my EOI. I understand the points test for the state sponsorship (190?) visa is 60 to pass. I will need to do the IELTS test in the hope of acrruing the maximum 20 points otherwise I will not have enough. I understand with a UK passport you don't have to do the test but I will be short by 20 points if I don't. What are my chances of passing the IELTS enough to get the 20 points?

I am hoping to be over in Perth by late summer 2014 as my eldest will have finished secondary school by then and I would like to get there before school starts again in September. My husband and I recently divorced so there will be just me and my two boys going.

Does all of the above sound right/familiar to any of you and is there anything I should be doing differently? Any help or advice on this would be much appreciated as my head is already mashed and I haven't even started yet!

Thanks

Debbie

Good luck with it all!

The trick with IELTS is practice - there are lots of sites on the internet that can help, or some people buy books.

I think that you will need the boys' father to give official permission for you to go. I'm sure others on here can give you more advice.

Yes, it's 60 points for the 190 visa. DIAC are proposing to change the fees in the near future, so that you would have to pay for yourself as the main applicant, and also for each of the boys. It's doubling what we were expecting to pay originally!!

Look at http://www.ielts-exam.net. There are loads of practice tests on there. For points you only have to do the general test which is easier than the academic. I am going as a single parent and needed a signed declaration from my son's father. I have got a template if you need it. Just message me your e-mail address. You just have to ask your ex hubby to sign it in front of a solicitor along with a copy of his passport. Cost me a tenner. Happy days.

Thanks for the response guys. Del70 I hope they don't change it in the very near future before I get my application in! Thanks for the heads up.

travelchic thanks so much for the link and offer of help with the consent form. Ex hubby has said he will not stop the boys from going 'if its what they want' - which it is. I might take you up on that offer when the time comes. Will keep you posted and vice versa.

verystormy - thanks for the high five. Whereabouts in Perth are you? My sister lives in Beeliar (South Perth).

Am going to send off my AASW application next week and get booked onto a
