tayloal
peg, I'm in a similar position but am planning on taking all of my belongings, well anything worth anything. I was considering selling it all and buying new but thought I would be busy enough when I get to Oz I wouldn't really want to have to buy furniture as well. I'm sure what I have will last a couple of years ! It is a toughy though.
Redsquare
Hi Pegg We plan to move in september. We've sold all our furniture and almost sold off everything else bar a few boxes full of keepsakes and reference books. We've got somewhere to stay for a while (in-laws) but will be starting from scratch. Judging by you signature it looks like you've got a couple of kids, it might be make the transition for them if they had some familiar things around them? Maybe take a movecube? Not sure how it will work out for us but life is a big adventure
SJT
Hi Pegg We were going to get rid of all our stuff and start afresh, then changed our minds. Firstly as I have been advised on here by some very good people, the thought of the container arriving and having your own stuff delivered is a bit like Christmas, especially if you have kids and there is the familiarity with it all. Second of all, we decided the move itself would be stressful and trying to find furniture for a new home with three kids in tow within the eight weeks as well as finding jobs and schools would just be adding stress to our already stressful lives. Once we have set up our home we can then slowly replace with new stuff, that we have chosen carefully not been rushed into buying and then we can then sell or give our old stuff away as and when its convenient. When are you planning on making the move. Sarah
pegg
Cheers guys ..... yep our kids would love our furniture, just the cost thing. But Redsquare tell me more about this "move cube" ..... sounds interesting. But will have a look into containers and see what prices are like. Live the dream guys
Redsquare
Hi Pegg A move cube is a smaller container if you don't need a full shipping container. They're available in different sizes. Not sure how much they cost though. Look for seven seas shipping online. *this isn't a personal recommendation and I don't work for them. Saw it online and thought it was a nifty idea. ali
Don't underestimate how much it will cost you to re-furnish a home here or the time you'll have to source exactly what it is you want. Like the UK there are good quality shops and shops that aren't so good. If you have jobs to come to and you start earning then it's not so bad, but if not you'll be dipping into your saving and they'll go pretty quickly. Don't forget too the cost of buying a car etc. We brought most things with us, but still ended up spending a few thousand $ on things
