Hi!

My partner is flying to Perth next week to start work. I will be staying in Auckland until the kids finish the school year. It took me a while to settle in her in NZ, but I thoroughly enjoyed the process! I cannot believe life has led us to yet another country in such a short amount of time! I am excited, just the usual worries of finding work for me, finding the right suburb and getting the kids into school. We're coming on a 457 and will see about residency once we have a chance to look around a bit! Rich will be working in Armadale, we have heard that Atwell and the surrounding suburbs might be a good place to start looking for a house to rent, but it anyone has any opinions, please don't be shy! We are moving with my 3 kids who are 19, 18 & 15 and my 13 y/o Step-daughter. It's gonna be busy and Perth may be a little louder than usual once we get there, sorry!!! Anyway, hi all!!

Welcome to PP

Good luck on another move. Only thing to consider is when you are looking in to getting PR, apply sooner than later due to your older childrens ages - definitely speak to a registered migration agent regarding making sure that you will be able to prove dependency so they can be included on the PR application. THe 457 visa to PR has often proved difficult for familys with older children.

Thank you for your reply. I heard that this can be a little sticky, I guess we'll have to cross that bridge when we come to it. We won't be waiting too long before making an application if we do decide to do so, so hopefully we'll find out soon enough! My daughter wanted to take a year out before Uni, but I'm worried that if she works too much, they will consider her independent.

Hi Carly,

We are also in New Zealand, Hamilton and are moving over to Perth September this year, we've been in NZ 10 years and I have been more than settled here, but it's not to be - work situation pulls us over to Perth, hubby has already started work and I'm bringing my boys 11 and 14. Hope we can settle and that it's the final move for us too.

Hi Julie!

Nice to know we're not the only one's! Rich and his daughter came to NZ in 2003 and so know more about how you feel! I guess at least we have a bit of an insight into starting again. Have you found a suburb/schools you like yet? Rich leaves in a few days and so I am trying to get him organised and figure out the best way for him to send money back. There is no way I can cover Auckland rent without him! Are your boys excited? My step-daughter is convinced there will be 'hot' boys there, so her priorities are sorted!

I remember reading somewhere on the PIO forum during my research a couple of years ago that it was advised for over 18s not to work until you actually had PR?

I found this on the government site... "Dependent children are usually under 18 years of age. If a dependent child is aged 18 years or more, the applicant must also prove that the child relies wholly or substantially on the applicant for their basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter." Not sure how much $$ they would allow for 'substantially'? This was one of the main reasons why we refused to move to Australia on a 457 visa, that and the lack of security that that visa brings... We had lived in another country for 5 years in that situation and would never do it again!!

Australia is our 5th country that we have lived in, we also did a 2 year stint in New Zealand, never settled there at all.

But, absolutely love it here in Perth!

Atwell is a nice suburb. You also have Aubin Grove just south of it. You could also look at Canning Vale, Kardinya and Leeming, they are all just a quick drive to Armadale. You could even go as far away as Fremantle to be honest, as you can avoid the rush on the freeways.

Can't give you any advice on schools tbh though as my 2 have both graduated.

Hi Carly

I think we are going to look at Baldivis, Hubby is working at Quinana so its quite close. I'm going over with the kids a week before the school term finishes to check out the schools, primary schools all look good, but its the High School that needs to be good, it looks like a new high school opened this year in Baldivis. My youngest boy is excited, but the older one has reservations, he's very much into his friends and lots of sport. He's at Boys High in Hamilton which is a really good school, so I''m a bit miffed about pulling him out. We have also been in NZ since 2003. It's very difficult choosing an area when you've not been over there yet. I don't want the kids to start school and then for us to decide we prefer it somewhere else and have to move them again. Time is short when you're moving kids and having to choose schools in less than a week!!

Hi Carly, We've recently moved over from UK with 2 boys 14 & 17, currently staying in Fremantle but moving to Atwell in a week or so, the high school seems to have a good reputation and initial contact with them has also been good, there's a friendly local shopping centre and larger shopping centre about a 5min drive away (if that), Rob is going to be working in Armadale, we did a run out there the other day and it was a 15 minute straight drive.

Securing a rental was a pain in the bum, you have to keep on at agents and when you see one you like you have to move fast...

We're on a 457 but hoping to put in for PR as soon as we can.

Like you i have the usual worries and anxieties that we go through but hoping it will all come together eventually.

Thank you all so much for your responses and advice!

Rich left on Thursday which was pretty horrible, but mainly it's just annoying that I had to make my own coffee this morning!!! (I've convinced him this is normal behaviour for a husband!) I guess now I've just got to sort out our stuff in NZ and wait until the school year ends. We are looking into whether we can use the Direct Entry scheme to go for residency as soon as possible. I am hesitant about using an agent because we have had problems in NZ in the past, but with the kids now being the age they are I'm beginning to think it might be the way to go.

Anyway, it's Saturday morning and I'm about to discover what other little things Rich did that I'll now be doing on my own. I guess I'll appreciate him more after living apart for a while ;-)

Thanks again and good luck to you all!

Hi Julie,

Rich is on a drive around looking for areas that he likes and just emailed to say that he likes the look of the Baldivis area. I knew I'd heard that name from somewhere!! Please keep me updated as to any information you get regarding high schools etc. It is nearly impossible to figure this stuff out online and although Rich is there, his priorities will be slightly different from mine!! (Control freak tendencies!!)

Thanks,

Carly

Hi Carly,

Yes I know what you mean, my oldest son says I can't imagine Dad looking at houses, its like him going shopping for shoes, he just doesn't do it. God help us as to what kind of rental he'll find, I dread to think .... I need to get over there fast!!
