What's your favourite herb ( of the culinary kind) and spice to use in the kitchen? Are you a chilly monster? More of a cumin lover? Some herbs and spices we've never heard of please?

My fav herb is an oldie but a goodie....corriander (children not so keen) but I love it! Love cumin too, although it does smell a bit like sweaty armpits, but I love it in curries and mixed with sweet mashed potato, it's a taste sensation! Any more.......

Having Greek blood means its oregano all the way for me! OH loves coriander.

also partial to some turmeric!

Cant wait to start growing my own herbs again in a couple of months. Snow killed all my herbs, even rosemary, in the uk, or floods. Never seemed to live more than a few months, inside or outside!

any tips for growing your own herbs and spices here?

Well i love Greece Greek food and all things that go with the country warts and all.

Oregano or Rigani as it called in Greece - the wild oregano so much nicer and cinnamon yummmm

Am in withdrawals from Greece presently its been 21 months since there last :: huge sigh::

I find that growing herbs in pots do better than if planted straight into the soil here. Potting compost has more nutrients to nurture them. Lemon grass does well as does rosemary. My rosemary cutting has done really well. Nicked a bit of my neighbors front garden heheehe. The lemongrass that someone gave me is very fast growing. The oregano does well too and is far better than dried totally different flavour.

Sage and Tarragon my faves. Tarragon doesn't grow well here and has no flavour.

I do love a bit of fire and spice.

Yep love a bit of sexy French tarragonnnnnnn. Sage used with pork in saltimboca marriage made in heaven!

I like chilli but not in everything, I know some peeps who use it in everything, hot sauce etc....can't taste anything else, when your mouth feels like Dantes Inferno!

Am I right Lozzachino that when I make a proper Greek salad I should sprinkle oregano over it, cause that is what I do :). Do you make good spanakopita? Invite for taste test please! :)

i love Lemongrass too Elfie, might have to try and grow some if it is growing well for you. Love Thai beef and lemongrass with kaffir lime leaves sprinkled over the top!

Was very lucky and got to go to spain and rome last year. In spain there was a beach bar on a hilltop a 2 min walk from our villa, had a couple of nights hanging out there drinking sangria and snacking on the freshest most delicious calamari, watching live music and people watching. In rome we had some fantastic pizza, pasta, arancini, gelato and prosecco til it was coming out my ears. This year i discovered i am wheat and lactose intolerant! Imagine going to rome and being wheat and lactose intolerant, dont think i could have denied myself all that gorgeous food whatever the consequences!

never been to greece though, ten years in the uk and never managed to fit in a trip :(
