189 visa for Carpenter - is 60 points enough for visa invite??

Hi All

So my husband got his IELTS results last week and we were pleased he got the required 7 in all sections, (8 and 9 in Writing/Speaking) as he found it nerve racking and stressful. We now have the full 60 points for the 189 visa providing he passes his skills assessment. However, our migration agent has suggested he retake the test to try to get 8's in all sections, gaining 20 points to take us to 70 for the visa. He believes this will give us more chance of an invite, which of course we agree. But we really dont want to fork out for another test and go thrpugh the stress again, with the risk he might just keep getting 10 points.

So my question to you all is, how many of you got invites for your visas with the required 60 points? I (possibly naively) thought if you had the points and the skill and your occupation was below the occ ceiling that you were good to go pretty much.....its such an expensive process we do want to get it right!

thankyou all :)

Hi, we at the moment have 55 points for 190 visa hubby is sitting IELTS again on Sat to try and get 8's, he has sat the test i every month for last 6 months he got 7's in 2nd attempt, but we would like to go out on Permanent Visa we have just had another tutor just to gain 8's very expensive and very time consuming and I dont think my hubby will want to do too many more, our agent has said we can do 489 visa once we decide enough is enough as we will have 60 points for that but did not say the more points you have , the better chance you have of getting Visa!!

I have a very good feeling he will do it this time and he will then have 65 points for 190, but will let you know the results in due course!!

Good luck and if I were you I think I would speak to another agent first as initial phone call would be free!!

Plenty of people have received invitations on 60 points, I don't know about carpenters specifically, but definitely 60 points has been enough for many.

Only 6 out of 8040 carpenters have been invited in first 2 rounds of invitations from the ceiling levels of occupations this year - just my opinion but I feel trades have better chance of bringing invited with 60 points as the receive less points for qualification. Once you get skills assessment back I would put in EOI with current points, see how it goes for 1 or 2 rounds, if you are not pushed for time with loosing points for age. If no invitation state nomination would be next option, if you partner doesn't want to do IELTS again, costs about the same and not down to luck which is sometimes the case with trying to get the 8's in all sections at IELTS.

I'm not a carpenter but only had 60 points at the time of application and got the invite. I did however manage to get another 20 points from IELTS afterwards. We had to apply without IELTS as July 1st deadline was approaching, to a avail of the old visa costs and luckily it worked out for us.

hi,

my hubby is a carpenter and we have just submitted an EOI for the 190 visa with 60 points. we submitted it 25/07/2013 and we had correspondence today that they are looking at it so now we are just waiting for an invite for SS. Not sure how long this takes though?

State Nomination applications are not ranked by number of points. If you receive state nomination you are automatically invited as long as you meet the 60 point pass mark - only 189 and 489 family sponsored applications are ranked by number of points - higher points invited first.
