Guest Nick Watts
Hi! I graduated with 2.1 BSc in Politics in 2012 and am currently finishing of my MSc in International Security to be completed in September 2013. I'm hoping to work for the next year, and save enough money to fly over to work on a temporary working visa for 12 months, with the possibility of settling permanently if I can find suitable employment/ sponsorship. I'm at the very beginning of planning my trip/migration and am looking for any advice I can get regarding my plans! Thanks for your help, Nick. verystormy
A WHV can be great fun. However, I think the chances of you gaining sponsorship are pretty slim. Be aware that employers normally don't hire WHV people for grad level jobs because you can only work for one employer for 6 months. Also to get sponsored your job must be on the SOL or CSOL lists - these are the lists of jobs that are eligible for perm resident immigration or sponsorship. As a new grad, your not going to qualify for that. Also, I can't see how an employer would pass the test that they are sponsoring because they can't find a local to do it. Oz has no shortage of grads.
allansouthuist
Hi Nick I moved over to Perth 6 months today (time flys) on a WHV, having at the time recently graduated with a 2:1 BSc degree in Geology Earth Science, but much to my amusement the mining sector had taken a severe slump, and hasn't seemed to recover since. So I made the most of my time here and got another job in the hospo industry to keep me going, and just last month my employer offered me a promotion with state sponsorship (190). Being on a WHV gives you only 1 year in the country, and a restriction to working 6months at a time, although you can extend the visa by carrying out 'rural' work. I've decided to take the job and sponsorship as I love the lifestyle here in Perth, but it just goes to show that you have to make the best of the situations you end up in. Although sponsorship seems to be much harder to come by these days, there are companies still offering it. The way I see my situation is that when I finally get my 190visa fully processed, I can still continue to look for a job within my sector, only by that time I will be a resident of Australia, and thus look more attractive to a prospective employer, making my chances of employment even higher. Best of luck with your plans Slainte Allan

Best of luck with your plans Slainte Allan The 190 visa does not involve employer sponsorship? Are you sure this is the visa you have or are getting? To the original question, I agree with VeryStormy that chances of a new graduate in politics getting a sponsorship are really quite slim. verystormy
Are you sure this what you want to do as a career over geoscience? There are still jobs for recent grads outside of Oz. But, the longer you stay out of the game, the chances of getting in diminish by the month - companies would rather take a junior who has just graduated over one that graduated last year. In the non mining front, there are a lot of geotech / land investigation and engineering consultancies currently looking for grads in the UK. allansouthuist
Verystormy-Absolutely certain this is what I want to do for the time being. Im still very much in tune with what is happening within the geo sector, but for now Im happy with my choice. Rupert- Not entirely sure what the visa is, but as far as Im aware it is state sponsorship. Cheers
DyLeB
Employers can not offer 190 state nominated visas as these are not employer sponsored visas, this visa is points dependent. Have you completed a skills assessment and IELTS??? The only visas your employer could offer you as a graduate would be 457 or 187.
allansouthuist
DyLeB- As I said I am not entirely sure what the visa is at the moment as I was only offered last month, I will find out more about it nearer the time. Cheers

Cheers Many employers offer sponsorship that are not able to as cant meet requirements of a business sponsor, the position is not eligible or person does not have required qualifications or experience in the role. Sorry to say but your employer has no idea how the system works and many hospitality jobs will not be able to be sponsored as not eligible or do not meet the TSMIT which is based on market rates. If your pinning everything on staying with this sponsorship it would be an idea to find out more now.
