alana rose
Hi, I have just arrived from Scotland and have a temporary rental in Connolly NOR. I like where we are as it's close to all I need. However I visited Rockingham & loved the beach & foreshore as it was very calm & kid friendly. Is there anywhere NOR that has anything similar. I've been to Hillarys and for all it was lovely it wasn't as good IMO. The beaches are lovely up here but I find that they are windy & the ocean seems to be choppy. Is this just at this time of year? I'd love to hear your thoughts on this, Alana
Chardy
Can't beat Rocko !! And Mandurah marina is quite like Hilary's ,(cue the NOR guys throwing their arms up in horror, LOL !), which we found to be really windswept too and that was in November. abc
You'll be glad of the breeze when it's 40+ degrees, believe me! It's your life, live where you like, not what people you don't know say on Internet forums!
StraighttothePoint
It's end of winter, so not beach weather really at the moment. Perth is one of the most windiest cities in the world and the beaches are affected by that. Calmer in the mornings when better weather returns, then the westerly winds hit around lunchtime, sometimes a bit earlier. In the height of summer you will get cracking days with calm conditions throughout the day. As with everything these are when the beaches are at their best. A few of the nothern beaches are surfers style beaches, e.g. Scarborough and Trigg, and these tend to be populated by boards and are less swimming friendly. South of those the beaches are broader but again can be hit and a miss and are dependant on the winds. Cottesloe is nice, busy though, and good for families when calm. As is Port Beach just up from Freo. Mullaloo is also probably ok for you with a family, is close by and is very popular, Hillarys is protected and also the coves between there and Trigg are good for kids. Again though in most cases the westerly winds tend to dictate what to do and where you are best to go. We live near you and we tend to use Mullaloo, Cottesloe and Port during the summer months. South of the river is the same with several good beaches for families and some surfers ones. Again all about research, going to each one and seeing what ones you like to be honest. After being here a while we don't swim until Christmas, way too cold before that Just bear in mind that kite surfing world champions come from WA so that tells you a lot After a while here you will get used to it all I guess and as abcdefghijklm above says you seek out what is best for you. Thanks for your feedback sttp...I know it's all about personal preference but it does help when people are willing to share their viewpoints when they know the area better. It's hard to have a definite opinion when you've only been here a week, so thanks again i'll definitely take your view on board:smile2:

I have heard yanchep lagons is meant to be very child friendly haven't managed to get there yet as the weekend we were due to go is poured down with rain. roxy
Def prefer NOR beaches when it comes to area and scenic but the water can certainly be more choppy. Yanchep Lagoon has nice water etc Other than that Cottesloe or Fremantle.
PaulandDeb
Whatever beach you end up using, just be careful of the dog **** allowed areas, and the snakes at times in some beach zones can be really bad, as for wind up here it's only windy if i have had a curry the night before:biggrin:
odies
worried me now , I have never seen snakes on the beach are they in the sand ?
roxy
You need to be as worried about snakes at the beach as you would be in your garden...If your following the path down to the beach its unlikely you will come across one. If you climbed over the fence and went treking through the unauthorised area of bushes... then your chances are greatly increased- common sense! My family has been here over 20 years and never seen a wild snake... its just one of things.. luck or misfortune lol however you view finding a snake! CookieCrumble
Yanchep lagoon is really nice when it's calm. In terms of kid friendly beaches I think Ocean Reef in the north is good as it's quite shallow for a while. Otherwise the beaches I've visited you get battered in the surf and I wouldn't be letting my kids go near it (if I had I any!) SOR I find the beaches are much calmer, we are near Coogee beach and that seems very child friendly. I have seen a couple of snakes on the beach actually, so you do need to be careful! PaulandDeb
Any rocky outcrop especially the ones with overhanging beach shrubbery/grasses will house snakes easily, we have been here coming upto three years we have seen several at the beaches in that time.
