stevie76
hi guys i wonder if you can help me iam moving to perth at the end of the year to work on the telecoms masts for the new austrailan 4G upgrade which has already kicked off big time in the uk . by the looks of things the work will be there for at least 3 or 4 years then you never know what to expect in this industry after that . as i have already got a job when i go over the missus has yet to find one which i hope will not be a problem as she is high in child care management . is there a high demand for child care workers in perth at the moment ?? also the cost of living is it expensive ??? currently we live on 2 wages at the moment about 50k between us which we get by ok .when i get over i will be earning about 70k which i hope will be enough to get a flat and live an ok lifestyle until the missus gets a job . also do you recommend any areas to stay in ???? as am currently looking at flats just now but the prices iam being quoted are about $1,500 & $3,000 a month is this the norm for perth ?? i would very gratefull if anyone can help me with some answers . i know some of the questions are basic but if i get a rough idea on how much monthly its going to cost me and wife then i would be able to budget for this . thanks for reading this steven . Hi a lot of what you are asking is already on this site. To get you started just type in cost of living in the search field. A lot of good stuff to read on the various posts that are returned. In fact there was one recently that asked the very same question, i.e. can we live on $70k per annum. If I find it will send the link. Also if you PM with an email address then I will send you an Excel budget sheet you can use and a list of must read websites. In the meantime yep it is expensive for some things and not so for others and it just really will depend on your lifestyle choices when you arrive and set up. Rents are around what you have been quoted and costs depend on how close to the the city you want to be among other things. As for finding jobs again this site is packed with people's views and worth trawling through and reading job posts. One thing that many find is that you need to take a step back when job hunting before you can take a step forward. Very common. So regardless if your wife is a higher position in Scotland there would be no guarantee that an equivalent level would be achieved immediately. Not saying it is not possible just that many before you have not found it as easy as expected. Just found these links that may be of use. http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/migration-issues/10759-real-cost-living-around-perth-wa.html http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/education/6292-uk-qualification-child-care-recognised-oz.html http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/money-finance/12286-salary-cost-living.html http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/renting-real-estate/12827-nor-sor.html Edited September 23, 2013 by StraighttothePoint
verystormy
First, I would research your wife's occupation as this is one of the areas that is heavily regulated in Oz and requires certain qualifications. Do also remember that a number of employers do not like to recruit the partners of 457 holders because they are only temp residents. $70k as one income would be a tight amount to live on and you would certainly feel a large difference in standard of living. But, if your wife could earn another $50-60k, then you will find you are about the same as now.
roxy
I really don't agree with the comment that people don't like to higher partners of 457 visas. It certainly wasn't the case with us or any of the other migrants we've met... Infact the employers I've been with as a 457 spouse were happy to have me... Its hassle free & my contract is no different to a resident, other than a reminder for a review to take place X months before my visa expires... by that time we'll be residents. I mean think about it..4 years is along time... An employer would have to be really particular to think 'ohh 457 visa.. I dunno I was really hoping for someone who could stay for 5 years' Haha hmmm Anyway.... Both my cousins here work I'm child care & both believe its in very high demand... I also have a friend from the UK on 457 sponsorship with a nursery but as for requirements I couldn't say how they compare to the UK... Perhaps consult a migration agent or have a good nosey around these forums and id say you'll find someone in child care who's already made the move. Are you coming out with any savings?? I start maternity leave in 6 weeks & will be on 1 salary... Which is also around 70k You won't be living the highlife but you'll certainly be able to live & explore of it until your partner finds work... My only question would be your set up costs.. We were fine as we both had jobs but for example our rental is $1760 pm + $1760 bond... Are you going furnished or unfurnished? Even furnished requires finishing touches... Kitchen appliances etc. Do you plan on buying a car? Will you pay for this upfront?? If so you may find you'll struggle or have to put things off until your both working. It's all what your prepared to do at the end of the day. When we first got here we didn't want to rush into anything so we house shared for 9 weeks until we picked an area & were settled In... Then we found it so much easier to find a rental. House sharing is very very common here As far as rentals go for me it depended on where we were working... If we needed a car/parking.. What are you going to be up to at the weekend? Personally I wouldn't want an apartment in the city... No room, no parking, traffic & pricey... Now we've been here 2 years we don't even go near the city.. Straight to the beach. For a young couple, may not need parking, don't mind paying a little extra to live near the city then Subiaco is perfect... Restaurants, bars & train at your door step. We both drive to work.. Live in Stirling at the moment but we'd both like to move to Scarborough for the beach lifestyle .. Pay a bit more for what you get but we wouldn't mind. Orrrr you could even do the complete POM & move NOR .. Somewhere like Joondalup or further north... Get a reasonable 3x2 rental... Maybe even with a pool $550+ per week ... & spend your days commuting from there. There really is lots of options & while its always good to come on here for other ppls views you'll never really know what you want or can have until you get here it's all part of the fun Good luck with your move!!!
