ali
I think this thread also helps manage certain expectations. As a visa applicant it is very easy to get caught up in the excitement and assume that everything is going to be hunky dory when you arrive. Obviously there are going to be trials that we all go through on arrival and this thread serves to highlight what some of those may be. I for one wasn't aware that the standard holiday allowance over there is 20 days. Having spent the last 5 years with 30 days that came as a bit of a shock. But thanks to Weekenddreamers post I can now go about getting my head around the fact (and make sure I only apply for jobs where at least you buy some ) Depends on the hours you work but some may attract accrued days off - I work and 80 hour fortnight and accrue an additional day off once a month which I can save and use if I want to. JenPen
What about the traffic lights ??? The 'T' junction's in Perth seemed very different and people were always going on red and were beeping me to go when it was still red. is this normal? Or were they just in a hurry? haha!! Chardy
You can turn left at some junctions if there is a red light as it only applies to straight on/turn right but didn't think it was much different to the UK ?
portlaunay
I thought that out of all the open threads on PP Weekenddreamer chose this one to make their first contribution. I think balance is important, there are many regular contributors to this forum I find I have a very different opinion to but there are other issues we may agree on. Forums are often described using the pub analogy and, if we can relate to that, perhaps we've just experienced the new people who moved in just outside of town coming up to the bar for the first time and, hearing some of the locals grumbling about the lack of staff at the post office, chipped in to complain about how unfriendly the town is. It doesn't really endear them to the regulars and they're unlikely to be received with open arms. Sadly, they drink up and leave, their perspective reinforced by their experience. Unfortunately, despite peering back in to justify their position, it appears that we might never see them again and that maybe a loss to our community but it's also self defeating. Perhaps they'll return on quiz night, when the atmosphere is a little more positive and they'll enjoy a laugh with us, it could have been so different. Bibbs
I am not sure what is wrong in having expats as friends, if it helps you to settle. Nothing at all. But I've always found the problem with migrants to the local population is they 'stick to their own'. A lot of social issues are because of a 'them and us' attitude, and not integrating into what's here adds to this. With Australians comments about 'little Britain', you can see it happening (there are other ethnicities and suburbs doing similar though). I also don't really 'get' the idea of moving to a different country, but then being surrounded by people from the country I left. Don't get me wrong, a lot of the Poms I've met I've got on well with and enjoy their company. I wouldn't be specifically aiming to only hang out with Poms though. eric durston
We agree it's hard to make friends even with the next door neighbour! We miss chatting at the local (small) pub. Moved six years with our children & grandchildren but still go (home!!) every year for three months for some sanity.
