Glenlivet
Do we leave it for packers to individually pack contents or should we start organising personal effects into boxes? If left to packers how do we guarantee contents are packed in sensible order? Never used movers before, naively assuming they will be super organised, but suddenly having doubts! Any advice/tips much appreciated
Nikkis2000
Hi Again! Most companies will insist on doing the packing as they have to use the proper shipping boxes etc for insurance purposes. I can only advise what we have been told by our company, but they have requested that we sort our belongings into groups i.e Get all the photo albums together so they go into one box, DVDs/CDs etc into another. This is especially important for anything that Customs may take an interest in (camping, sporting equipment etc) as then they only need to open those boxes, rather than rooting through all your stuff trying to find what they need. It's a good excuse to complete some "Life Laundry" as a friend referred to it!
SJT
Hi Me again. I personally packed a few things, like I wrapped bottles of perfume in bubble wrap and then put then in containers like you get at takeaway shops, and also other toiletries I was taking, not a lot just a few bits and pieces and then just left those in my dressing table. Just so that I knew stuff like that would be ok and I was advised to do this before they came in. I also packed clothes, just to get them out of the way so that I knew what was coming on the plane with me, again packers were happy for me to do this, we were given a list which was very detailed as to how many boxes they would use, like Emily's bedroom would have three size A5 boxes of clothes, so I used the boxes that they had said they would use, but I obviously left the boxes untapped. When they do come and pack, our packers wrote the initials on the boxes of who had packed them and on the ones we had packed they wrote home owners packed. It just helped to get things into order and clear the way a bit. I think sometimes you need to do a bit of packing to get your head around stuff. But I have nothing but praise for our packers. They were the biggest men I have ever seen in my life but they packed my stuff with such care. We had not one broken thing or damage plate etc and they pack it up all so quick. When they do come in it starts to feel very real and very exciting. Its easier to say I know, but do try and relax and enjoy it, as hopefully you will only being this once. We have been here 15 weeks today, but it feels like a lifetime ago when we left the UK. Even though hubby still has to find work, Perth feels like home and its a fantastic place to live. ali
Our packers were great - we put stickers on kitchen cupboards that needed to be packed - they really did everything - even custom made some packing for my daughters rather large dolls house
Glenlivet
Thanks for the advice, I'm feeling less anxious about it! Have 1 of 3 packers coming tomorrow for quote, initial online quote was eye watering 6.5K We do have a large house and maybe I over estimated quantity but if thorough quotes come back with similar £££, need to re-think stuff to take. Hey ho, all good fun and Sarah, I'm now starting to get excited about it all!
Nikkis2000
You'll probably find the quotes are all fairly similar. This is because the actual shipping costs (ie what they have to pay Maersk ) are the same. They make their money from selling you the insurance, which you can get much cheaper elsewhere. I take it they were quoting for a 40 footer? As a comparison a 20 footer is around £4k

Nikkis2000
We've gone with PSS. It was between them and Anglo Pacific. The cost was almost identical and in the end it came down to a gut feel that I got from meeting the sales rep. So far they've been really good and we've got one free airfreight carton which is a bonus. But I suppose only time will tell once the container arrives in Perth!
