portlaunay
The Annual Fremantle Festival draws to a close this Sunday with a parade through the town. My children's school, Fremantle Primary, will be parading their incredible hard work over the past few weeks. The school has been working with the Nyoongar people and Mr Phil Walley Stack and Mrs Theresa Walley in particular who have shared their knowledge and givenpermission for our children to recreate the Dreamtime story ofMamung, the whale who saved all of the creatures. MrWalley Stack tells the story like this – A long time ago, at the start of the greatflood, the seas started to rise over the land. So Mamung the whaleopened his mouth and swallowed all of the sea and land creatures. Byswallowing all of the totems, Mamung stopped them from being washedaway in the floods. When the waters receded, Mamung beachedhimself to free the totems. The Nyoongar people open his belly andall of the totems were released. So now when a whale is beached, theNyoongar people open it’s belly to release the totems and eat it’smeat. If you'd like to learn a little about Nyoongar culture, cool off in the breeze of the Freo doctor, refresh yourself with an ice cold drink and enjoy the Freo community then all are welcome. Bring hats and sunscreen, it's going to be a hot one. portlaunay
Final day on the whale. Construction is 90% finished, Mrs p is fitting the outer skin of fabric, all of which has been printed by the students at Fremantle Primary. It's looking vaguely whale shaped, lets hope it holds together. Now where did I put that gaffer tape….

portlaunay
Well thank you so much to anyone who did make it down, it was certainly a hot one and I think we hit a whole new high inside the whale, 40 minutes through Fremantle felt like days. Well done to all the kids of Freo primary and everyone in the parade, it was spectacularly warm but hopefully the beer festival helped with the fluid balance. Will post up pics when I get some, the ones from inside the whale weren't really for sharing. What a wonderful place this is, amazing people, amazing teaching staff at Freo primary and amazing parents but it could not have happened without some truly inspiring students. We went on Saturday and the boys managed to get their glasses filled up for 1 token as a 'taster'. 1pm - 10pm and they all bought 50 tokens.... safe to say that I had a very hungover hubby yesterday!
