7cdb
Hello PP's Well, we decided we were going to make the leap over to Perth area around 2 months ago. So we've contacted an agent in Edinburgh and signed up with them to sort out my skilled visa. Depending on what I get in ielts will depend on visa either 190 or 489? I would prefer a 189/190 but we'll see what happens. Fast forward to a couple of weeks ago and decided we would put the house on the market as A) it costs a bloody fortune to run (grade 2 barn conversion) looks nice but not very ptactical and B) we've been here just over 2 years and have never really settled. Stuck it on for £300k and thought well we've got a year to sell it........fast forward another week and its SSTC for almost the asking price........happy days looks like a little rental for most of next year. Oh and then decided to have our boys 1st birthday party on Saturday and tell everyone after 5 years together we have got engaged and are going to live in OZ. Now as I'm waffling ......we are coming over to Perth on 24th of this month and we have got 3 weeks based in Hillarys with a car so can you guys list the MUST DO'S whilst we are there. Thanks guys much appreciated.
ali
I would look at the suburbs you think you may want to live in.

ali
Do a quick search - there's been a couple of threads on that recently with heaps of ideas
StraighttothePoint
Bibbs did a good list recently. http://www.perthpoms.com/forum/migration-issues/12119-reccie.html Also what about some practical stuff like:- Write up a checklist of things you would like / want from a suburb and then use that when over as a rough guide. (As a sort of marking system giving each line item a mark out of ten. As far as you can anyway and only as a guide to help you narrow the suburbs down to say 2/3 on a short list.) Bank to open account and deposit some funds? Go to some home opens - Rentals and/or For Sale. Visit new homes villages across different suburbs. Use public transport to see how it all works. If you find a suburb you like try commuting into the CBD as an example at peak time travel time just to get an idea what that is like and how long it would take. Does not matter if you will / will not do this all the time but good exercise to see how busy the city is.) If no job(s) chat to a few recruiters. Then, because it is not like Auld Reekie, search for the oldest buildings in Perth city and Fremantle. That is a good game Good luck
verystormy
Kings park Rottnest island Penguin island A trip to margaret river for a few days Mandurah - cruise and dolphins Perth zoo Caversham wildlife or peel zoo to chill with the tame roos
Plimthing
Start saving and practice wafting flies away! Also get used to travel at 60mph, despite being on an empty road that you (well, i ) would generally use as a racetrack in the UK! On a positive note.. public transport is very good compared to blighty and petrol is very cheap! Marina is nice at Hilarys, as is the aquarium. Redsquare
Mindarie marina is lovely, not quite as commercial as Hillarys. You could also take a trip up to Yanchep to see the koalas and roos.
Smurtonio
Hi, You might want to consider some regional areas because if you take the 489 option you will not be able to live in Perth, I am in the same situation and get my latest IELTS results this weekend. Good luck
7cdb
Hello PP's Well,we have been out here a week on our hols/recce observations so far (all based on opinion which is not meant to offend ) Getting thru' Perth airport was fun! about an hr queuing because of a cock up with 3 flights arriving at the same time ?? Wtf! Not what you really need at silly o'clock with a 1 yr old after a long flight !! Hey ho Pick up the Lexus from thrifty......no car seat for junior so instead of traveling to house in the daylight it was proper dark when we eventually got there. Driving is fun! I don't think I have ever been so chilled driving but being a petrol head I think at 90p a litre only a V8 would do! Childish I know, but you only go 0-60kms quick then chill and sit @ 70 Km which to me is hillarious ! Holiday rental in Hillary's very nice but way too big for us,nice area and can't stop going to the marina for lunch but probably stopping in a £1 mill house which is way way off our budget, and still cheap for this area it seems is a bit silly Been into Perth city in rush hour on the way way to Freemantle and Rockingham Rockingham......like skeggy with the sun. Not for is at all. Driving thru an ind est to get there ? What's that all about Freo........what a cool place, wouldn't live there even if we could afford to but I bet it's a cracking night out! Definately get the "thing" there. Started to look at the houses/land thing....we have budgeted $500,000 for a house which has to be new and not too big. Not knowing a thing about this market or areas etc it has been a good old learning curve. Because of where we are based we are probably getting a little ahead of ourselves and have set an area where we would like to live.....we think! I'm a fridge/AC man so I am not overly worried about finding work but at the same time will have to mortgage again to around $250,000 so we really need to find the right area for us. We have so far been up to Yanchep and back to Burns beach for NOR tomorrow we are going down to Bunbury and calling in to Secret Harbour on the way back. Still got the Zoo and Rottnest to do. Spent this afternoon at City Beach absolutely stunning and a great way to spend Sunday afternoon. So far really enjoying the way things roll around here
Redsquare
Sounds like you've had a busy week! Great to hear that you've been spending your time well. Which areas are you looking to buy in?
7cdb
Yeh but a good week when you know its -2 back home! Anywhere between Amberton NOR which I really liked the feel of with whats being built there and Bunbury if we like the area today. All a big learning curve and where we end up will also be dictated by my work All we do both now is that the folk seem really helpful, friendly and chilled the area is beautiful and perfect for bringing up kids
Redsquare
Had to check where Amberton was.. It looks like you're looking for a quiet life (not a bad thing). We considered Yanchep but felt it was too far out for us. After looking around, we settled on Edgewater, an older area near Joondalup. It's lovely here, but don't tell anyone, it's a secret Good luck with the rest of the trip. Let us know how you get on.

Let us know how you get on. yeh we popped up to Yanchep, looked good on the outside as a golf resort/beach resort with commuter links on the way and 600m plot for £3.50 all good until you get there mmmmmm a bit more to go yet (does OZ have a word for hillbillys ?) we've got a lot to learn but still feeling good about things. Been to the Zoo today and really enjoyed it. $49 for a good few hrs entertainment $50 for tea on the way back home is not an expensive day out, laying here now with 'er indoors and little man snoring knowing after the drive back up the west coast tourist drive back from Perth,a full belly from the Dome at Hillary's harbour my work for the day is done. It's 28 degrees again tomorrow. Life's good. Btw will be looking at Edgewater....

As you are probably starting to realise, $500k is not a huge budget for a house in Perth - it is $35k below the average. If you have time, i would have a look at areas around Mandurah and Dawesville. We are building a new house next to the beach in Dawesvill on a good size block with views for about your budget.
7cdb
VS yeh $500k can do it,but like anything men always want that little more I will keep on searching as there is no rush!
