Importing a gas fire

I looked at importing a dual gas/electric range cooker (£800 in the UK $5,000 here) but found out that trying to import gas appliances is a bit of a nightmare. Apparently they won't be aussie 'standard' so you have to get them converted and checked over and signed off, and even then some people won't install them. I learned (from forums mainly) that the cost of all of that was going to outweigh the saving.

So, gave up and went back to looking at regular ovens and separate gas hob.

I think your biggest problem would be the difference in pressure and flammability.

Aussie gas sort of charges out at you in a positive and altogether more energetic and enthusiastic way. It's also brighter, more colourful and burns more fierce and for longer.

UK gas on the other hand just limps along, depressed and grey in an orderly but apathetic manner. If you can actually get it to light it looks like the last candle on a five year olds birthday cake - tenacious and stubborn but disappointingly dim and just a bit annoying rather than contributing something worthwhile to the occasion.

Your problem will be that no reputable gas fitter will instal it as it won't have an Aus compliance sticker. Check if it can be converted as injector size will be different and you will need a regulator. your gas fitter may be able to convert but won't be able to certify and fit a compliance sticker. You would only get it installed by a dodgy gas fitter as any new appliance installed needs a certificate sent to energysafe / alinta gas showing the installers licence number and the compliance number from the sticker on the product which you don't have. I have had to report non compliant stuff through work and it means heavy fines and possible loss of licence for the installer so no compliance sticker, no decent gas fitted will connect it up

Guessing on what I deal with an injector will cost a few dollars and a regulator less than $20 ish so parts wise not a lot just depends what your gas fitter will charge to do, in reality injector will take a couple of mins to fit and regulator is fitted external to the unit on the incoming supply so will be part of the install price. If on LPG not ng a few mins more to adjust the low flame setting on the valve, no time at all, find a friendly gas fitter and do a deal for the instal as well

Does anyone know if it is possible to buy a gas fire in the uk for installing here?

We are looking at putting on in our new house but the cost to buy in Perth is about $5k min - going up to about $8k. I can get the same model in the uk for $500. Any ideas?

Hi, just wondering how you got on with this as we are thinking of doing the same thing? Thanks!
