When you really notice the Time Difference

My Poor Purd is undergoing surgery as I type. She has been in pain all night and the vet is doing what they can as they think she may have a blockage. It has made me realise how the time difference can be a right pain when all you need is to hear a friendly voice for support and you cannot call them in the middle of the night. They don't tell you that in the brochure, but I know it is part and parcel of the deal I have signed up for.

Also, for those who are bringing their pets over, get the pet insurance sorted PDQ. We have not and so far it has cost $160 for consultation, $700 for anaesthetic, $300 for xray, after that I don't remember as I was just numb and too pre-occupied signing the consent forms and thinking I have flown my baby 10,000 miles, had her locked up for 30 days and now she could be seriously ill.

She will be fine. You need to stay strong and don't give up.

My cat was also pretty ill in quarantine, it is a bluddy cruel and unnecessary process and thank god it has been reduced to ten days, although that still not far enough as far as I am concerned. How long as she got to go until the end of the sentence? Hopefully soon she will be back home and you can pamper her and get her back to good health. In the meantime, work out what you can do. When my cat was ill but still imprisoned I sent a vet in every day to check him out, I felt better for doing something. He came out severely underweight but soon bounced back.

And as for pet insurance in Australia. I gave up on it, in a separate incident, my other cat had a paralysis tick bite, we had medibank pet insurance and after a year of pursuing my claim, I just gave up. Australian insurers don't pay out, I am a seriously persistent person but in the end I just had to give up as they did not answer any correspondence and always "lost" the telephone call. We always had pet insurance in UK, but here we realised we might as well just save the premiums and "self insure".

Thanks v. much.

She came out of quarantine on Sat, but has not been herself. I just put it down to the stress of a new house and surroundings. until last night when she started yelping.

I have called the surgery and there is no news. Still in surgery. I am sat here with both phones by my side. This wait is agonising.

Not good news about the pet insurance then.

Thanks so much.

I now know why the vets did not say anything on the phone.

I was shown the x rays and it shows that Purd has a piece of her spine in her pelvic area. The vet cannot say for sure, but in her opinion, either something has fallen onto Purd's back or she has fallen onto her back. I know that nothing like this has happened since Sat, but of course she has not been with me for a month previous to Sat. I honestly don't think anyone has intentionally harmed her, but we will never know what has taken place and we are more concerned with how she is and what the future holds for her. She had a blockage as she has been in pain when needing to crouch to go to the loo so has tried not to do this. I can only think the pain got worse over time. She is a strong dog normally and does not show pain easily. They have cleared out her out and we have some pain meds to give her, 3 a day and also some laxative syrup to make it easier for her to pass her motions. We have to return on Monday for the vet to see her again. Their concern at the moment is to get her comfortable and to manage the pain and then they feel she will need to be referred to a specialist for his opinion.

I never envisaged anything like this in a million years and what a start to Purd's new life Down Under!

Like all the others, my thoughts are with you. We had similar, Buddy came out of quarantine, with an eye ulcer, took him to the vets, they discovered a large hole in one of his teeth during the check up......it had to come out. $950 later we came to a rapid conclusion, become an Oz vet, live well.

I really hope this has a happy ending, I really do.

Thanks Guys. Purdy has had a good weekend. She is still yelping a little when she tries to relieve herself, but she is still on strong painkillers. We are back to the vet for a further check up this evening. We took her for a gentle stroll yesterday along the foreshore at Rockingham. The vet had said to still exercise her, but only a little walk and nothing too strenuous.

I have not contacted quarantine or anyone. There is no way that anyone is going to admit anything, and to be fair, this could have happened anywhere. If the vet had said it had happened in the last two weeks, then I would have been straight up there, but she cannot say when this happened. Purd may have had this injury on the way over. If someone did say oh yes I did it, except me poking them in the eye, it won't help my Purd and I am trying to use my energy to help Purd.

This is something that no one could have imagined and honestly I would not let our experience put anyone off from bringing their pet to Oz. My other little one is absolutely fine and just glad to be home again and like us is counting the days until the sofas arrive.
