Have Australia Post lost the plot???

I rarely start a thread, but today I was so gobsmacked when I went to my local Post Office that I just had to say something!!!

Having spent a day or two writing Chrissie cards and the letters that go in them (yes I still do this by hand and do not use a "generic" computer letter), and I trotted off to my local Australia Post outlet to post my Christmas greetings to my friends around the world.

I walked into my local Post Office to see a sign that said "sorry we have run out of stamps".... I intially chuckled as I thought it was a joke! But NO it wasn't a joke... they seriously had run out of stamps..... Postman Pat said that their stamp orders for a few weeks had been "mislaid" so he had nothing to sell! WTF!!!!???? So off I trundle to another Post Office miles away, only to be told that they have a similar issue and have very few stamps left in stock and although I could buy what I needed today... they would also be out of stock tomorrow!!! What on earth is happening with Australia Post? I was initially very peed off that their $1.60 cost for cards last year had increased to $2.55 this year, but went with it..... So how can a national monopoly increase costs by so much and not have stamps readily available for the public to buy if they want to. I won't be sending any cards/letters again by post. I will hand deliver those I can and use email from now on. Guess that so many other people will be doing the same. Australia Post you need to get stuff sorted or you are going down the gurgler!!!!

I take all mine back every from here every May / June and put stamps on most of them over there. Then I make my 85 year old mother walk round the village where we live, in all weathers, hand delivering those that are local and she posts the rest. Works a treat and I never have to use Aussie Post. Keeps my mother fit as a fiddle as well thus saving on valueable, and limited, NHS time and other resources. Win, win really.....

OK as a subpostmistress , you only run out of stamps if you do not order correctly and the price has gone up in the uk and has started to put people thinking hard on whether to send as many cards.

Cards from Oz to here have been very slow this year still not received OH birthday cards yet posted 2 weeks ago. and yet I sent 2 parcels via parcelforce at 17kg full of pressies and at a cost of £175 and they arrived 5 days later ?!? My OH says this year has been the busiest he has seen on parcels sending and via the internet we have over 300 parcels not collected by people not in when postie called.I with my foot operation are sitting here typing this while he and the staff are busy working , its a hard life....

Hi Rossmoyne,

That would have surprised me when I first arrived but I have to say that 9 months down the line, it is what I have come to expect in WA. What makes me laugh though is when the salesperson acts like it's completely normal and doesn't seem to acknowledge the absurdity of the situation. I think the heat helps me to cope with these things as I am often too hot to care.

BBQ's Galore in Edgewater ran out of gas last weekend- how can a BBQ store run out of gas??!!! Bunnings next door sold out too ....and guess why...."Because BBQ Galore ran out!"

Life in WA............;)

This happened at my post office too but they were quite happy to print out postal labels for me so I could send my cards.

It's not as bad as some places. I have a friend who lived in the Seychelles. The supermarket could obviously only stock what the ship brought in and one month there were shelves upon shelves of HP sauce and very little else. Another time they had to go without toilet roll for months. Still, at least he was living in paradise, much like WA actually.

First world problems.

... and as a postscript.... I went to the Post Office today to pick up a parcel and Postman Pat #1 was smiling broadly and told me he had his stamps now.... apparently his order had been delivered to the wrong Post Office outlet and had arrived hours after I had called in! He was doing a healthy trade in 55c and $2.55 stamps - and actually agreed with me that the rise from $1.60 to $2.55 for UK stamps was "a bit rich"! The whole experience today turned into a bit of a social gathering with people in the queue and we were all chatting about the merits of Moonpig - emails - ecards etc, but most of us agreed that you just can't receive anything nicer than a card that someone has actually spent the time and effort writing and posting to you..... So I shall continue with my hand written letters and cards next year! Happy Christmas one and all!
