Adam
Hi, A new house we moved into had a reverse cycle AC which had just brook down. Got my first cost estimate for a reverse cycle system and came up as 13,600 $ yes 13,600 Daikin system with 10 out lets 14Kwt. Any idea what would Evaprative system cost ? should I install evaprative given the fact I have no heating system ? any word of advise please cheers
nicolac34
I'd get some more quotes if I was you. We got r/c air con installed in August using Ambiance Air as they were by far the cheapest to quote. Our quotes ranged from $7,990 up to $12,000 for 3 zones and 7 outlets with a 10kw system. We have quite a small house, 124 sqm in total (4x1) so we didn't need a larger system. It's been a god send during the hot weather and was also very pleasant to heat the house in Winter, in my mind it was worth the extra money spent. An evaporative system installed by Ambiance for comparisons sake would have been about $5k. In terms of energy consumption I've heard evaporative is relatively cheap to run, but I didn't like the moist clammy feeling it leaves when running in high temps. We haven't found r/c expensive to run at all, in fact our electricity bill has been coming down since we installed it! We put that down to not using those oil heaters anymore during the Winter. We have a digital reader which tells us how much our electricity is costing at any given time. Base cost in the house is about 7-10 cents per hour (so not using anything, no lights on, just the fridge etc running). When we put the air con on it goes up to about 80c per hour whilst it's working hard to cool it down, and then sits at around 30c an hour to keep it at the right temperature. So if we kept it on 24 hours a day (which we don't) it would cost us $4.80 a day to run.
elfie
that is reasonable cost for keeping cool then how do you get the electricity reader if you dont mind me asking used to have one in the UK
nicolac34
that is reasonable cost for keeping cool then how do you get the electricity reader if you dont mind me asking used to have one in the UK It was the one we used in the UK actually, bought from Amazon, just brought it over with us http://www.amazon.co.uk/Owl-Connectivity-CM160-Wireless-Electricity/dp/B0041H6VXI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1387268202&sr=8-1&keywords=energy+monitor You can change the settings so it's in $ and enter in the tariff you are on in Australia. rob-c
Evaporative is cheaper to run but will only drop the ambient temp by about 10 degrees, so on a 36 day the best you can hope for would be 26. You need a window or door open for the system to work, some people don't want to do this overnight. I would always go for reverse cycle system. Ducted is very nice but if the unit breaks you loose all rooms a/c. We went for multiple split units, mostly because I got them through work but also if one gives up you can still sleep in another room nice and cool
verystormy
I would opt for RC every time. Mainly because of the ability to heat and the ability to offer more cooling. The first christmas we had in Perth it was 42 on christmas day, so the best a evap would do is get it down into the 30's. Still pretty hot and thats at best! We are building now and going for a ducted system to every room

verystormy
Us too getting ducted zoned RC in the new house but having to make do with one wall unit until it's ready......phew !! Same as us! We have one in the main living room. Didnt have that for the first 3 years. The first year, we used the other living room - there is a big open plan and a seperate living room - but we boiled as it faces west. Luckily our bedroom at the moment has a big balcony and we leave the doors open all summer but still gets damned hot. Looking forward to having AC to go to bed with! verystormy
We are building with Home Group WA - used to be Scott Park. Building where we are now in Southport Dawesville - just south of The Cut next to the beach. The build hasnt started yet - just about to go into pre-start. At the moment the wife is at home going through the big foulder with all the options for fixtures and fittings. We got a deal that means the house will be complete - everything from painting to carpets and the quality is very good. You might have seen the add as it was a model they were pushing a lot called the Rivello Resort. What about you?
Chardy
We are building in Highbury Park, Baldivis with Ventura and almost at lock up now. They have been great so far. Only things we have to do at the end is window treatments some extra electrics (mate is a sparky and way cheaper than the pre start costs) and the landscaping of course ! I'm doing smart wiring as will have NBN too !
verystormy
Our estate is smart wired by e-wire, so no issues there. We will have window treatments to buy. But only for the bedroom initialy as it is designd for rear living, but the blok backs onto a lake - the edge of the lake is my rear wall, so totally private. But, two of the walls in our bedroom as glass so will need something to stop me being woken up at dawn. We will have the landscaping to do. But, i have passed that to the wife to do as she has spare time. Mainly just going to lawn it. This is our place http://www.homegroupwa.com.au/homes-by-design/the-rivello Though we have made the master bedroom rear wall into all all glass doors and the kitchen dining area had the central pillar removed so it is all glass and the splash back behind the cooker turned into a window. The two front guest rooms are now just one room which will be a studio / second living area. The laundry room has gone and the sink and washing machine plumbing put in the skullery so we could extend the second bathroom to fit a bath. nicolac34
Looks very nice VS! Hope to build one day... if we can ever find a block of land within price range and where we want to live! Thought I'd also venture why we went for ducted over splits in each room.... we decided that having big white boxes both inside the house and decorating the outside of the house was going to be quite ugly. Also splits can be quite noisy when they are on and we also liked the idea of having our house temperature all the same rather than having to go individually to each room and sit and wait for it to cool down. Our ducted system is whisper quiet, you really have to listen very hard to try hear any noise from it. There's no blast of cold air that come from splits and it's just gentle air flow coming through the vents. We also priced up getting splits, and in the end if we'd put them in every room (which we do have with ducted) then it would have cost the same anyway. Hey VS, that's a nice house design, our build diary is here http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64997 E-wire is not the same as smart wiring the house - they just provide an alternative internet/TV service direct to your property. I was referring to installing data points around the home to get faster cabled internet connections than using WiFi, ideal for TV and media streaming. The best bit is we will have NBN (one of the few!) so no more ADSL speed but might go for a 50/25Mbps service. We liked the display homes with window splashbacks until my wife said I'd have to clean them !

verystormy
Nice design mate. Looks like a huge block! Are you going to put a pool in? We are planning to, but it will be a headache as the gap at the side of the house isnt big enough for a bobcat. So, thinking about digging it out by hand! They said they could put it in before the build starts, but a neighbour did that and it was trashed by the builders and had to be re-done. Also the wife has insisted on a fire place. It was the wifes idea to have the window splash back. Cost a bloody fortune as it has to be special glass. Ah - yes the stuff around the house for data. Not sure yet how we will play that. There is only the two of us and i am not there most of the time and the main thing we use is an ipad which is just for browsing the net / emails and skype. Pool is deffo on the cards, we have a 572sq.m block so room on the back, just got to see what the end value is to see if it can go on the mortgage. Hope our side access is big enough, how wide is a bobcat ? Have to admit we are having a glass splashback so still a lot to clean but no tile grout to get stained ! Doesn't sound like you need full house cabling but you know where I am if you do (registered telecoms cabler) ;-) Adam, sorry we are hogging your post, not heard of Actron but Daikin are good and not heard bad things about Fujitsu, just compare the inverter specs for the models you are being quoted on as it could make a big difference to running costs. verystormy
You need a minimum of 1.3m width down the side - ours is 1.1 so doesnt fit. I will definatly think about you if we have any cash to smart wire! Budget has blown out already though - started with a budget of $480k all up and now at $560k and will go out another $10k

Dakin are rumored to be the best as are Actron and I did wonder about spending a bit more for the "brand". In the end we went with a Samsung, we were reassured by the sales patter that they were a big name in themselves and they hadn't had any issues with them. So price won over a big name. Philpom
I agree that ducted reverse cycle is the way to go. More expensive to run but so much cooler than evaporitive. Our outdoor unit packed up a couple of summers ago during the hottest part of summer and we had to go without for 6 weeks whilst the repairer kept turning up with the wrong parts. My wife almost went insane.
