Hi all

Hope u all had a great Xmas I know I did.

When you booked your flights was it a case of the more months notice the cheaper they are or did it not make much difference.

it made a difference when we were looking, 2 months ago, I could get the flights for £4200.00 approx ( there are seven of us) but we had to wait for completion of our house before we could book, we booked last Tuesday to fly on New Year's Eve which was one of the cheaper days to go and it had gone up to £5400.00!!!

Sometimes the airlines especially Emirates will have a sale which is a good opportunity to get cheaper flights.

We're the same as you...checking out flights but can't book anything until we've had an offer and completed on our house sale.

If cost is the most important thing to you then booking earlier may make it cheaper however consider when booking because cheap can sometimes mean slightly naff flight times, including departure and arrivals, and long stops overs in boring airports with little to do. If you can get good times for a few quid more then consider that side of things as well would be my advice. No point of getting it cheap and then having to have 10 hours in a stop over, end up shelling out as much on stuff there and then it all ends up the same in overall expenditure.

For example I always leave Perth at 10.30pm, have two hours roughly in Dubai and get picked up in Glasgow at noon. On the return I leave at 2.30pm, again with two hours in Dubai and arrive at 5.30pm Perth time. It means it is easier for check in times in terms of getting to the airports on both legs, no boredom or a lot of unwanted or unexpected expenditure in Dubai and a suitable time for either getting picked up or travelling home on arrival on both legs. Worth considering all your options when doing a long haul flight as you may be depending on others and also overall costs could be hidden.

Hi Lou. It is emirates I fly with constantly. I am a platinum member which means I am guaranteed the cheapest flight and a seat even if it is a full flight - they will bump someone for me. It is rare that is worth waiting. On every flight there are a range of codes allocated to different price brackets. They are not moveable. Of course the cheaper ones get booked first.

We could booked ours as we have a small window in which to go! Our daughter is 2 at the end of July so we'd like her Grandparents to see it and we have to enter Oz by the 22nd August or lose our visas, the only other thing to consider was cost so we booked early. It also gives us another definite, plans can be made as plans and not, well if this happens we'll do this or that!

I don't actually think there's that much to organise, a container for all our stuff, a holiday let for when we land (I have 2 sister's in Perth so they will sort that (hopefully)) and flights there. The big one for us is selling property, the in-laws are buying ours but we have 3 rental properties to sell. If we don't sell them we will be very short of cash so this Thursday they go on the market!

That is a small window, at least it gave you a focus which must've made making decisions easier. We had the same idea, stay here for the kids birthdays (February and March) then leave after that.

I love your attitude towards organising the move, when you say it quickly there's not too much to worry about

Good luck with the house sales!
