Protest against the shark killing legislation about to start

Just wondering if anyone else went to this yesterday ?

We travelled to Cottesloe from Secret Harbour with 3 kids and our own placards to support this protest.

Over 3000 were there but only time will tell if the government will listen and prevent a potentially catastrophic change to the ocean life off Perths' beaches.

It's anything over 3m. They'll be targeting White Pointers, Tigers and Bull sharks on a line of 70+ baited hooks. When they catch something it's shot and left in the water. When sharks are killed they release three different chemicals that seem to ward off other sharks for some considerable distance.

It's not a proud time to be a Westralian.

Political move by the State government? It shows that they are doing something after what they claim is a lot of research. Is it just the cheapest option though which would fit in perfectly with current state in WA government thinking? Lot's of background stuff going on I bet.

Akasully bit more info in here re what it is http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drum_lines and State Governments position here http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/premier-colin-barnett-defends-shark-killing-as-wa-bait-line-locations-revealed-20131227-2zyvf.html

Only time will tell if El Colin will do yet another back flip or not. What interetested me was that Troy Buswell was the minister for Fisheries but he packed that in early December 2013 just as all this was kicking off. Could there be a split in their party about this and that Troy is trying to distance himself form the back lash that he foresees coming? Who knows but very strange timing if it is not an issue for them internally? If it is then keeping up the lobby against, and forcing the issues, may come to fruition in terms of a re-think.

Interesting that South Australia have refused to go down this route.

Strange how they think a 1 metre reef shark will see the bait and think its not for them !

Another protest is planned for 1st Feb at Cottesloe do please join in if possible, this issue needs further resistance !!

But is it the cheapest option I wonder.... just think about the cost of all that bait over a year, let alone the cost of employing all those fishermen etc!!!

This whole proposed solution is so wrong on so many levels.... sounds to me like a knee jerk reaction... something that the WA government (whether they are liberal or labour) have never been good at as they never seem to listen to anyone with any specific knowledge and experience on any subject at all....

Love WA with a passion, but am very seriously unhappy with the way the government is going on so many fronts right now!!!

Watching the news last week it brought up the fact the the WA government didn't advertise the tender for culling sharks for long enough. It may lead to a court order making them re-advertise.

That got me thinking.. If they're forced to advertise again, can I apply for the tender?

I have no intention of culling sharks but if thousands of people applied, would the government have to review every one taking an extortionate amount of time?
