Gave my notice in today!

Today was the day I had been dreading for months. I gave my 3 month notice in at work today. I have been through a roller coaster of emotions in the build up, everything from delight, through to guilt and sadness.

I wrote the resignation letter last night and found it really hard to say how I felt, I really do feel happy and privileged in my job to work with such a great bunch of supportive people. How do you say goodbye to that easily after 10 years?

I waited to catch the head teacher alone and asked to have a word in private and was taken in her office. My heart was pounding. I produced the envelope and said I was sad to say that I had to resign from my post. Lord only knows what must have been going through her head at that point. She looked shocked and even more shocked when I said I was emigrating!

When I explained that our family had a PR visa for Perth she was fantastic and said that it was an amazing opportunity for us and she could understand why we would want to embark on the adventure. I must point out that she is actually an Australian. So I guess we are swapping countries. She said that many people would give their right arm to do what we were doing, we were very lucky and of course I should go for it. She said it was very sad that I was going but she understood. At that point I gave her a hug!

Now I need to tell the rest of the staff. It should get easier after this I hope.

I must admit that I had a terrible thought as I drove home from work, I wondered if I had actually read the visa offer letter correctly and questioned myself if we did in fact have the visa approved. Doubting myself at this point is nuts. Totally ridiculous self doubt as about to give up my job. No safety nets in place as I let go of the ropes!!!

You've done the hard bit. I think employers are generally happier when they know people are making "life changes" rather than moving to another employer.

Good Luck with the three months. It will fly by and you will soon be here.

I gave my old boss three months' notice and he did not speak to me for two of those in a social nature. Your boss sounds very happy for you.

Well done!

I was fortunate enough to have my job held for a year, still have 9 months to make my mind up (not that it's going to change, I'm loving Perth).

As you've got 3 months to go, I'd also recommend that you start packing and thinning out all your belongings. Car boot sales at a good way to make some extra money.

Thank you all so much for your replies and words of support!

Definitely a major thing ticked off the list. The sense of relief is immense. I am lucky with my boss. OH needs to do his yet but is debating whether to wait until the minimum notice period or be extra considerate and tell them sooner. Better for all in many respects but risky if they turn round and get rid of him sooner to bring a new person in to fill his role. Dilemma.

Today I need to tell the others, debated whether to make an announcement but decided to do it individually so I can enjoy seeing each and everyone's faces as I drop the bomb. I'm going to milk this stage and enjoy it now the hard bit has been done!

It certainly has has made it feel real. No time at all really. The advice of thinning things down is a good one. Every time I open a cupboard I re-evaluate whether I really need the contents. Just got to actually do it now. Saying that though, we have just gone out and bought new solid oak bed frames, tempur memory foam mattresses and a dining table. Now this may sound crazy but we were between container sizes so we might as well make use of the space. Also, we did a comparison shop for it in Oz and found them to be obscenely expensive. So whilst we do not want to spend any more than needs be, it does seem like a wise decision. The dining room furniture is so simple it should fit any style of house. It even extends so we can fit up to 12 people around it. Just need to find some friends to put round it once we arrive. Big table, no friends, ha, ha. Not for long though, one hopes!

Well done! It's a real dilemma as to whether the OH should give his in sooner but I think if there is any risk of them finding out now you have made it public he would be better formalising it with his employer. I say this as, if they find out, they could let him go and deny all knowledge of your plans but if he has given formal notice I would have thought he would be given an element of protection. A bit like if you report something to the police...they won't allow the other party to make a counter complaint haha! I think I've made the mistake of not telling my work my plans...not that I needed to and my OH and I have the same employer, but it's a small place and word has gotten out...next thing you know there is a restructure and they've given someone else your job! When HR say to you "well you might as well take the alternative job offered...(which is likely to be assessed at a lower grade)...because you ever know you might be in Australia by the end of this year!!!" you know you've been fleeced!:confused:

We've had some quotes for shipping and like you we were over a 20ft container but I'm being harsh and frantically getting rid and selling stuff...after all it's probably mainly clothes, personal effects and a few fairly new pieces of furniture we really need to take. We've sold my cross trainer this week for £150 and I know I can get another one similar off gumtree for $240. But it's difficult and the shippers have said we have a lot of clothes! I don't believe them....I'm sure it's just that we have them all, including the kids, on wooden hanger not the thin plastic ones.

Exciting times for all of class 2013!!!

Well done!! I hate resigning anyway but after such a long time in an amazing job and to do something so huge it must have been terrifying so the self doubt is easily understood!!

Congratulations now you have let go you can climb that mountain and reach for the stars.

Ooh, nice quote Jenpen!

Re: shipping, the guy said that considering the size of our house, we didn't have that much stuff. He said we were quite minimalistic. I liked that, meant we were clutter free (ish!). Next week on the same day we have another guy quoting, a delivery (of 2 beds, dining room furniture and other stuff whilst still living with the old stuff we need to ditch). We also have a surveyor coming round on behalf of the house buyers. It is going to be very crowded if they all turn up at the same time!

I think the advice of telling OH's work sooner as they may get a sniff of it, makes a lot of sense now you say it. You never know who may drop you in it. Thanks for that.

At worked today I started telling my closer colleagues the news. It was again, extremely positive. Stunned, sad but excited for me. Lots of questions and interest. Some said they were jealous (in a nice way) as they had always wanted to do it. One lady even said her sister lives out there in Perth and loves it. Said she had been to visit too and thought it was beautiful! We talked about living by the Indian Ocean and the colour of the sea....if they weren't jealous before, they were then!

All this coming out of the closet has allowed me to enjoy the stage I am at and wallow in the excitement of it all. Sharing my news with people who are genuinely pleased for you makes the world of difference.
