There is a process called RRV Normally it requires you to show on going and continuing ties to Australia and have resided for 2 of the last 5 years. However, there is some good news. The dept does show a lot of discretion with these and I have recently seen them granted in cases that appeared to be not even close to qualifying. There also fairly cheap I would though run this through a migration agent in order to maximize your chances.

VS...as the OP said they moved to Oz in Jan 2008 and it's now Jan 2013...5 years...and assuming they didn't move the day of their visa grant they are probably over 5 years by now or very close which is why I said assuming their visa has expired. Also the OP said they had lived in Australia for LESS than 2 years which is why I thought they wouldn't be able to apply for an RRV but if immi show a lot of discretion with these types of cases then I agree...definitely speak with a migration agent to see if they can help....(I think I should always caveat my posts with that, particularly as I'm not qualified to formerly advise! I find it very interesting though and might just sit my migration exams when I get to Oz!) I hope the OP can find a way through this maze! Good luck Lou
verystormy
Yes there is a fair bit of discretion. There were a couple of people on PIO recently who were granted them after only being in Oz a few months over 5 years ago. I was very surprised but, it seems that it is happening.
