thyroxin, do you get free perscriptions over in oz , the same as you do in the uk?

No you pay for prescriptions, it isn't free under Medicare even though you show your Medicare card

No isnt free, but I get a box of 200 x 100mg for aroung $26 and 200 x 50mg for the same so that lasts about 5 months so is not expensive at all.

This is good news for us, as my OH has an under-active thyroid. She is on 120mg thyroxine a day, and we were thinking of asking our uk doc to give us a years supply before we leave to see us through for a while.

On another note, we are just going through our 457 application and I am worried that my OH having thyroid problems, plus localised scleroderma (a form of lupus) might have a negative impact. I have researched this online, and others with the same conditions have been granted visas. Any comments or reassurance would be welcomed :-)

We got our 190 visa and my partner has an under active thyroid and is on 200mg eltroxin per day, he was also on cholesterol med and has haemochromatosis but is healthy and well, a ok weight etc. Try not to worry, I did and it is a waste to time that you could be spending getting excited about the adventure.

Before you pay for a UK prescription, just check you can bring the medication to Oz, most of ours came through but some antibiotics were not allowed in and were destroyed by customs. If you get them free in the UK then it may be worth the risk.

For the sake of about 50gbp (what it would cost for a years worth) is it really worth trying to get that amount from the UK!

I dont think a DR would give you a prescription for a years worth anyway, your dose might change within that time.

Thanks very much for the comments guys, certainly put my mind at rest. I am convinced everything will be ok, but can't help worrying until the visa is granted. We do have a very good relationship with our doc in the uk and Jo qualifies for free prescriptions with her exemption certificate. If we explained to the doc why we were asking for a big supply, I guess he would understand. Given that the meds seem reasonably priced in Perth, we may just ask for a small supply to ride us over til we settle. Thanks again.

If you come over with a years supply it may look like they are not for personal use - I'd go with the option of asking for 3 - 4 months worth

Cheers Ali, yep, we will do as you suggest and look to bring in a small supply. I have completed our health declarations on immi this evening and booked the medical for Jo, so just waiting now. Our agent seems to think all will be well for the visa grant, so happy days (hopefully!)
