kirstywales
Hi all well the visa is granted and flights are being booked, we have arranged temporary accommodation in Fremantle to start, though my husband will be working in Perth itself. What's your advise for the first couple of weeks after arrival? excited but dawning realisation of how big this move is ! cheers kirsty

nikkiwd
Just the obvious things really, sort bank accounts (we have openened one with NAB already, we just go in to collect cards etc when we arrive), register with medicare, Tax File Number, mobile phones. Have a look around and get your bearings... and don't forget the all important trip to the beach:wink:
KazG
I agree with Nikkiwd. we've been here 7 weeks and did NAB bank, Medicare and applied for Tax File Number in the first few days so we could have some time to relax after the move. We have been house sitting in Fremantle for 4 weeks and have fallen in love with the place. We are viewing houses to rent but still trying to get beach time before we have to start work
Tree
One thing we didn't bring enough of is 4 way extension leads. You can't buy them here and they cost a fortune to import! I highly recommend you go to B&Q and buy some - reason being most Oz houses have only one plug point per room and if its a double and you put a conversion plug in then you'll struggle to get another plug in. So definitely bring extension cables - personally I would recommend one for each room! When you get here go to Bunnings and buy some Oz plugs and change the one on the lead. We only bought 2 UK extension leads and we really really regret not brining more! Feel free to bring an extra spare one for me ; ) if you do, PM me, and I'll happily swap you 2 Oz extension leads for 1 UK one!
lozzachino
Good point tree. I hate the lack of power points! But i guess you get what you pay for and being in a new build rental that have gone for the cheapest options! We have no power points in our bedroom area passage way, total nightmare for hoovering. And in our bedroom we have one power point behind the middle of our bed and one opposite halfway up the wall! Get as much admin done as you can in your first two weeks but also find time to relax. We aimed for one or two things a day and then had some time to enjoy our surroundings, beach, park, shops, house, whatever. tfn is so easy to apply for online. You can do it at the library if you dont have internet when you arrive, thats a bit of a pain to get if you have no proof of income or address. Swap your drivers license and do medicare cards as soon as possible. I think you need the medicare slip or card before you can do your driving license. Once you had these two items, you are sorted for id.
