redrum
Hello there fellow Poms, I guess I am a bit late coming to this forum, having been living in Australia for 14 years now. Majority of the time in Perth, my now ex-wife and I moved over east for a couple of years back in 2007-8 but returned as we loved it so much over here. Looking forward to hanging out in the forums and can probably offer some practical advice having been around the place for a bit. See you around :-)
Akasully2
Hi redrum, welcome to PP! So where did you live on the east coast? How did it compare to perth?
redrum
Hi :-) We actually moved to semi-rural area about 45 mins from Canberra, over the border in NSW. Was a lovely location on 60 acres of land - it was in an extremely hilly region - the Australian in me would call the backyard a mountain but really it wasn't - but extremely pretty and very quiet. I used to commute into Canberra. The biggest issue (apart from having a baby->crawler and lots of deadly snakes) for my ex was the isolation - you get that anywhere in that kind of setup unless you grew up in the region I guess though. Canberra itself I guess I didn't really rate either, the locals console themselves with saying its close to the mountains and the beach. I guess I thought of it as a bit too far from anywhere - couple of hours to the beach, and a little less to the mountains. There just didn't seem to be too much to stimulate without a long drive and at the time with a baby in tow that made things a little harder. So all in all we didn't quite set ourselves up for a positive experience in hindsight. The weather was very dry and we got snow where we lived a few times so it got pretty chilly in the winter - wildlife was great - we had wombats and echidna living on our land - and the obligatory roo mobs wandering through frequently. We had been in Perth a few years and had decided to have a change of scenery and had scoped out Sydney and Brisbane which didn't feel right for different reasons. Overall I am still glad we spent the time over there, it was definitely different from Perth, but I don't regret coming back to Perth either.
