Yey! Yesterday we sent off all certified evidence for the training and employment bit of hubby's skill assessment! He's a Joiner. Sent by DHL it should take 3 working days to arrive and the application itself was completed online. We've got a pretty ambitious plan so I'm praying for no hold ups!

anyone else at this stage? Vetassess suggested it should take just 3-4 weeks but I've factored in longer just in case lol

We'd love to be able to fly over in September, which is crazy I know but if everything goes smoothly there's no reason why we couldn't do it. Hubby is particularly worried about the IELTS which is next on our list to book, I'm thinking of booking a few hours with a tutor.

How are you feeling now ur finally there? Has it finally sunk in yet??

Yes and No! We've been here two months and got a lot of the main stuff done. Formalities, job, house etc but we're still without our furniture which is due on Monday. I think once we're surrounded by our stuff it will feel more real because it'll just feel more permanent than our "camping" arrangement!

If your OH is concerned about IELTS a tutor might be good. It sounds like you're taking the right approach though as some people assume it will be easy and don't prepare. Practice is the key! Does he have to get a specific score or just doing it for extra points ?

September would be a great time to come - just warming up again for summer !

My, you have been busy lol. I imagine it'll feel more like home when you've got your things around you. Well done for achieving so much already!

We need him to get 7s for points. He did IELTs around a year ago with no preparation and didn't get enough in listening or reading. Researching it I think a lot of it is down to technique and understanding what they're after so hope a couple of hours with a tutor would be worthwhile. Plus it pins him down so he can't keep putting it off! It seems so daft as he's English but needs must.

wr've decided on Seotember as my daughter is due to start school and we want to avoid her starting full time school here only to have to go back into nursery/kindy once we arrive. Plus it'd hopefully give hubby time to find a job before everything slows down for Chistmas/summer hols. And I'd like to avoid turning up in the mid summer heat, would prefer a gradual run up :)

Just received confirmation from DHL that my documents have been delivered and signed for by 'Theresa' Considering it was Labour Day in Melbourne today (or yesterday if you're in Melbourne due to the time difference) I'm surprised how quickly they've been sent. Now it's the wait to get the results. Anyone else waiting for their skill assessment too?

Holy Cow!!! Just received an email from Vetassess confirming the positive outcome for the first part of DH's skill assessment! I was so convinced it was going to fail because I'd missed something (how paranoid am I?!?!). I can't believe how quickly it has come through either. On to the next stage now, need to book in for a Technical Interview as I don't think there are any Practical Assessments scheduled.

I am so excited and happy right now :jiggy:

Hi my name's Dan and i'm a carpenter in UK looking to emigrate too. I've done a fair bit of research on here and POI and just have a couple of questions if you don't mind. Firstly though congratulations in getting over the first hurdle i can imagine your nails are bitten pretty low by now!... So anyway i was wondering what the very first step is, do i need to fill out a form on the 'industry.gov.au' website, is that the first step towards the trade test or can you apply directly apply for a trade test? I'm sure there's an obvious answer online somewhere but i can't seem to see the wood for the trees! Also i was wondering about the employment history part. I've been self employed for the past 5 years so i can ask my accountant to write me a letter of proof, i was just wondering if that would be sufficient or will they request to see my accounts. (Just means i'd have to get everything up to date)!! Also are you using an agent i'm in two minds at the moment.

That's all for my questions, thanks in advance, much appreciated.

Hi Dan,

We decided not to use an agent. We had a free initial telephone call but after lots of research I felt it was something I could do myself. Especially with the help available on here and PomsInOz. In my opinion agents charge a lot of money for what they do but a lot of people use them and find their assistance invaluable. There's no harm in giving one a call, I spoke to Go Matilda. I would recommend you have a good idea of the process before you speak to them to get the most out of it. Although it was nerve wracking the evidence required was pretty straight forward really and an agent can't gather it for you anyway!

Not sure how much you already know so apologies if I go in to too much detail. Have you looked at the immi website and considered the different visas available? Do you know which one is most suitable for your needs and whether you pass the points test? Depending on your age and qualifications you may need to get extra points by doing IELTS (International English Language Test System). As well as the IELTS there's also the skill assessment. As a carpenter your skill assessor is TRA. They 'contract' it out to Vetassess and Victoria Uni who are the organisations who actually do the skill assessment. I assume you're in the UK?? First thing is for you to check whether you should state your occupation as a 'carpenter', a 'joiner' or 'carpenter and joiner', you can look at the fact sheets on the skill assessors website for a definition of each. You then need to complete the TradeSET questionnaire which is a free, simple yes/no questionnaire about skills related to your occupation. Completing this gives you a reference number which you need to complete the first part of your skill assessment - the Training and Employment check. You complete the application form online ($600) and follow that up by sending the certified documents by post/courier. They then take a few weeks to complete that part of the assessment. If you're successful you are then able to book in for either a practical assessment ($1500) or a technical interview ($1400). If you are successful following that, and you've done the IELTS (if required) then you can go on to submit your Expression of Interest with Skill Select.

In respect of your self employed history, I didn't need to show this for my hubby's skill assessment as you only need to show you've been working full time for 2 years and for the past 3 years my hubby's been employed, however as we're planning to claim points for 8 years employment in the visa application we too will have to show evidence for around 5 years self employed. He was a sub-contractor paid through CIS, we therefore have a weekly or monthly Statement of Earnings (can't recall the specific name but they're basically like wage slips) and will send in a few for each year. We will also approach some of his contractors and get a reference confirming when he did work for them and detailed information of what he did. Do you have suppliers from whom you could get a statement from? I would also suggest to complete a Statutory Declaration covering the entire period of Self Employment confirming the duties you perform, weekly hours worked, start/end date etc. My hubby never had an accountant - I used to do it myself! Although I don't plan on sending in anything relating to his Self Assessments. We sent in the following documents -

1. CV

2. NVQ Certificates

3. CSCS Health & Safety Test certificates

4. Detailed reference for each period of employment or Statutory Declaration if one isn't available

5. 2 wage slips from the beginning, the middle and end of each period of employment

6. P45 showing the end of each period of employment

7. Before/after photos of 3 pieces he has made and fitted.

I think that was it! I'm happy to help with anything more if I can. Good luck!

Hi there,

Thanks very much for all the information i really appreciate you going into so much detail. Didn't get chance to come on here over the past few days, typical isn't it, you get the ball rolling to go then the phone doesn't stop ringing with work! Anyway your explanation makes the process seem much simpler, i was toying with the idea of using an agent but the cheapest reputable one i could find was £1500. That would pay for the flight!

I'm looking forward to starting the process now and hopefully i'll sneak in before the fees undoubtedly increase in July again!

Best of luck with the rest of your application and hope it comes through quickly for you. Once again thanks very much for going into so much detail.

Dan
