travelchic
I called orange about it and they said they need 3 weeks notice and then I can use it wherever I want. Gonna do that this week. Debs
flatpack
Yes if you get it unlocked it will work in Oz. A phone locked to Vodafone in the UK will not work on any other Vodafone network unless it is unlocked first.
nikkiwd
I think most do but be cautious, recently my OH bust his Samsung Galaxy 3(for the second time) and luckily with insurance they gave him a new one. The new one specifies on the box that it is only compatible with European network providers meaning it wouldn't work in OZ. Its a bugger as he was hoping to take it being new and all! I think its a fairly new thing as the older one didn't mention anything like that.

Would have thought they all work the same way.
nikkiwd
We wondered if they were starting to put blocks on them to stop people buying them in Hong Kong for example and selling them on to Europe for a profit? Hubby did a bit of googling and found it is a recent thing saying they are geographically sim locked. It was only the Samsungs he looked at though so not sure if other makes are doing it. aligard
Just been looking Nikki and I think your right.....seems they can only unlock your phone for Europe. What a shame

If I were you I'd be contacting them and asking for one without that restriction on, they haven't replaced like for like. I had an unlocked iPhone that was insured and when it got damaged the insurance company sent me one locked to O2, fat lot of good that was as I was about to leave O2. They eventually swapped it for an unrestricted one after I kicked up a fuss!
flatpack
In fact Nikki, if I remember correctly Samsung have been embroiled in court action with Apple, they are claiming each other have stolen their idea's, software etc.etc. Samsung have had to concede certain thing in certain parts of the world. Not sure on the details but certainly in the States they had there backsides handed to them.
Plimthing
We had Vodafone contracts in UK and had them unlocked prior to coming over here. Went to Vodafone OZ and they needed another unlock code that only Vodafone UK can provide. After umpteen emails to UK finaly got the required 'code' required and all was good. So don't just go and get it 'unlocked' explain what you are doing to Vodafone and they should give you another code. It's a royal pain in the butt once you are over here. I gave up and bought a 'pay as you go' phone over here, so much easier! Don't expect Vodafone OZ to help either, as soon as they find out what you are trying to do they just blankly say you need another unlock code and usher you to the door.
