Claudette
Hi I understand that there is a $10,000 AUS cash limit to carry in to Australia or "foreign currency equivalent" - does this mean 10,000 in any currency or for example, if I were to take in Sterling it needs to be the amount if exchanged to AUS$ i.e. £5,500? Admin
There's no limit to the amount you can bring in, you just have to declare if you fetching in more than $10,000 AUD (or equivalent) Yes, the 'equivalent' would be circa £5,

You must declare to Customs at point of entry all cash amounts in excess of 10,000 AUD OR equivalent. You are then required to provide evidence of how it was obtained. This is simply an exercise in deterring laundered money entering Australia. You are still entitled to import cash amounts in excess of 10,000 AUD once you have provided such evidence. I think.... . Claudette
Sorry, that's what I meant- declare not limit. Thank you for your replies. Both very useful.
